This question was the main headline on the front of the Daily Mail on Saturday, Feb 27th followed up by a 4-page feature inside. Relatives of some dead people are angry because they say their deceased relative didn't have Covid but it appears on their death certificate. Some say they had tested negative. So what is the real figure? Users of this website will already know that I think the figures are lies, exaggeration and alarmist. They are though, aren't they?

I heard on the media to-day that if COVID-related deaths were removed from the total deaths in the UK so far, the total would be below the five-year average.

In the latest Bulletin the ONS states,

"Using the most up-to-date data we have available, the number of deaths from week ending 13 March 2020 up to 19 February 2021 was 616,124. Of the deaths registered by 19 February 2021, 129,113 mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate. This is 21.0% of all deaths in England and Wales. During this period the number of excess deaths above the five-year average was 107,726 deaths."

That shows that without the COVID-related deaths, the deaths are 21,387 below the five-year average.
Is anyone still dying of 'flu, pneumonia, infections, etc? Just asking.
Good question naomi, it will be interesting to see if they are going to issue the figures in a few years time. It will also be interesting to see if the number or deaths from cancers, heart disease and other illnesses increase in the very near future as a direct result of the lack of treatment due to priority care being given to Covid patients.
bluemoon, the figures are out now, see my link. The "due to" thing is going to be difficult to know....I mean how do you distinguish between people who died because they couldn't get care, people who died because they thought they couldn't get care, people who died because they were scared they would get covid if they tried to get care, people who died because their relations told them to stay at home and not go anywhere for any reason (I know a woman who was told this by her GP daughter)

Thanks for all the replies folks. Really interesting. I don't believe the figure is falling because of the vaccine or because of lockdown. I believe the virus has killed the weakest and most vulnerable so far. People are more resistant to it than some think and now that the weakest have fallen, lots are more resistant to it. Many, many people tested positive and didn't develop the illness, let alone the disease. And the more that happens, the lower the infection rate will become.

OK, you can come round here with your garotting wire now. Apart from that, everything's fine thanks! :o)
well you are entitled to your beliefs even though they are wrong.

"Is anyone still dying of 'flu, pneumonia, infections, etc? Just asking."

Rather juvenile.

Harold Shipman used 'old age' to get 250 - 500 people sent up the chimney in smoke.
.///// I don't believe the figure is falling because of the vaccine or because of lockdown. /////

I think that you are wrong, but entitled to your opinion.

.//// I believe the virus has killed the weakest and most vulnerable so far. ////

I agree.

////Many, many people tested positive and didn't develop the illness, let alone the disease.////

You mean haven't developed symptoms. I agree........but, they can still transmit the disease.

////People are more resistant to it than some think and now that the weakest have fallen, lots are more resistant to it. ////

That sounds good and maybe correct and that is my definition of herd immunity, but not the scientific definition, however studies have been very confusing, as to what % of the population have antibodies ranging from 5% to 45% pick which one to suit your argument either way and how long the antibodies last and to which, if any, variants the above apply.

Isolation AND vaccine are our only weapons.

No garotting-;)

//Isolation AND vaccine are our only weapons.//

You are right Sqad! But we need a better army to use these weapons and I fear we are being let down by a large proportion of the troops!
quite right sqad
I admire your way of wading froo anti vaxxer chite and refuting each point patiently

I cdnt - no wonder you made it to consultant and I had to sweep the streets to earn a crust to eat! !
// That shows that without the COVID-related deaths, the deaths are 21,387 below the five-year average.//

and with covid deaths is around 100 000 more.... jesus

that is why the excess death calc is more accurte for the zillionth time as it allows for these effects
