' Donald Trump has stumbled and fallen, and the establishment is not going to let slip this last opportunity to stomp him and his movement to death.

On Sunday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a startling ultimatum:

Either Vice President Mike Pence and the Trump Cabinet invoke the 25th Amendment, declare the president “unfit” for office, and remove him within 24 hours, or House Democrats will vote to impeach him again.

As the Senate, which would have to hear the case and hold the trial, does not meet again until Jan. 19, the day before Joe Biden is inaugurated, what is going on here? It sounds absurd, like rushing to hang a man who is going to die the next day.

But such is the blind hatred of Pelosi’s House for Donald Trump.

“House Democrats want veto power over whom Republicans can nominate.”
Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina suggests holding off sending a bill of impeachment to the Senate for 100 days, to give Biden a chance to get his appointees confirmed, and then indict and convict Trump of sedition when he is a private citizen.

What would be the purpose of impeaching a president who hasn’t been president for three months?
Answer: A conviction would strip Republicans of the right to reelect the man who got the largest number of votes in their party’s history.

House Democrats want veto power over whom Republicans can nominate. And this is the crowd that does not cease to bray about its devotion to “democracy.”.............'

The people did decide, in 2020: Trump seems determined to refuse to respect that decision, to the extent that he incited a riot. He spent the four years before that refusing to respect anything else about the office or the country he was representing, nor indeed most of its allies. He is unsuitable for office.

There are historical precedents for ignoring people wholly unsuitable for office, letting the people decide, and then quickly regretting being so generous with demagogues. Democracy is only a part of the picture -- there is also the rule of law, and there is also basic decency. Both of those disqualify Trump for office in future, and indeed at present, whatever his supporters may think.
As a matter of fact, Spungle, Impeachment is a more powerful removal from office than defeat in an election: it disbars Trump from office in future, too, and also strips him of various rights former presidents enjoy (including generous pension rights, enhanced security costs, etc.).
No. The article doesn’t make much sense.

Trump has been beaten, his Presidency is over. Very unlikely the Republicans would nominate him again. He would get nowhere if he stood as an independent.

So there is nothing to exploit. Whether he is prosecuted or not, it makes no difference to the outcome.

It is for the Senate and the Courts to decide if Trump has done wrong and what the punishment should be. People like Pat Buchanan who exonerate Trump have been his enablers for the past 6 years, and are equally as responsible for the undignified end of the Trump administeation.
Impeachment is unlikely to succeed anyway, as it would require all Democrat and 17 Republican senators to vote in favour, a tall order.
"Donald Trump has stumbled and fallen, and the establishment is not going to let slip this last opportunity to stomp him and his movement to death. "

and quite right too.
Ah
The kraken awakes.
It took its time
Still, suppose you were right Spungle and it's better to move on. What is Trump going to do in order to help the country unite? Will he, for example, drop his legal objections to the result in 2020, concede the election, and urge his supporters to rally behind Biden in order to help the President-Elect in his coming four-year term? Will he promise never to undermine the legitimacy of Biden's presidency in either his words or his actions in future? Will he agree to condemn unequivocally the riots, not in a hostage video but because he sees how dangerous they were? Will he express contrition and apology for his role in firing up those crowds, lying to them, and feeding them a false narrative that the election was "stolen"? Is this not what you are calling for also?

And, if not, why not? Why is the burden to "unite" and "move on" only on those who are trying to seek justice and accountability, rather than on those who incited a de facto coup attempt?
If it's democracy versus anarchy, the Republican senators need to decide which side they're going to take. Political expediency shouldn't really come into it, but it will, and that could cause long term damage.

I would have agreed with you until I heard Jon Sopel on the Steve Wright Show (Radio 2) yesterday. Listen for about 4 minutes from 15:34 - 1hour 34 minutes into the program:

jim: //What better way to unite the country than by putting someone who incited a riot......//

'In his Wednesday speech on the mall, Trump declared, “We’re going to cheer on brave senators and congressmen and -women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.”

Trump added, “Everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

Nowhere in Trump’s remarks was there a call to violence or to invade the Capitol building, or to engage in the mob criminality that took place under the Capitol dome Wednesday afternoon.'

The purpose of impeachment is to neutralize a threat to American democracy. That is what president Trump is and impeachment may not actually stop him if he just attempts to seize power.
Khandro, what about Trump's remarks do you not understand? Don't forget that the dogs of war have dog ears and can hear dog-whistles.
it is quite clear what he wanted them to do khandro regardless of the weasel words he used. "You will never take our country back with weakness"; "we will not take it anymore".

Do you believe Joe Biden stole the election khandro or do you think Donald Trump lost it legitimately? If you believe Biden stole would you consider an armed uprising to be justified?

That's not even remotely a defence (plus it's selective quoting). Remember, too, when Trump called on his supporters to "liberate" certain states, eg Michigan, from Covid restrictions? You cannot believe that he meant that they should write stern letters to their Representatives -- and nor did they, given that several turned up to the Michigan Capitol while armed to the teeth. Nothing much came of that, in the end, but again it's sheer luck.

Trump incited a riot. He may not have foreseen all of the consequences of it -- almost certainly not, since Trump has clearly never been blessed with foresight and imagination -- but he is responsible nonetheless. He spent months lying to his fans, and apparently lying even to himself, that this election was stolen from him. You cannot expect people to respond to that message peacefully. You cannot defend him if he goes on to call them "patriots".
I don't know what's worse, Trump or enablers and apologists for Trump. After all, he can't help himself but everyone else should know better.

If he's done something impeachable he should be impeached. I don't think it'll succeed, but they should still try.
A Republican senator who votes for impeachment will never be forgiven by the Trump loyalists and would probably lead to him losing his seat at the mid-terms. Self-preservation is a very powerful influence.
It's 8 days till Biden is sworn in. Impeachment/25th is just going to sow more division. Biden has already said he wants to heal the country, last think he needs is a lengthy impeachment trial when trump will be gone in just over a week anyway. As for those that say he should be prevented from running again, well he will be in effect, I can't see the main party backing him again after the last week etc and he'd get nowhere as an indy. So lets just calm down a bit and let the presidency expire naturally. Then he can burger off to Scotland and play golf and be wee jimmy's problem!
Do you think that the Democrats will continue with their cries for impeachment when, according to the FBI, an armed mob is ready to riot on Sunday?
That's why it won't work Jackdaw. The Trump cultists already want to string Mike Pence up as a traitor for not going along with the coup.

This despite the fact he's been going along with coup for the last few years.
