Another of the cricket greats has gone. Edrich was an opener for Surrey and England in the 60s and 70s and scored over 5,000 Test runs.

RIP John.
Didn't he keep wicket for England too?
You were just ahead of drmorgans.A very brave and skilful opener. He led England once in Australia when Mike Denness dropped himself.
Don’t think so Sqad, are you thinking of John (J.T.)Murray who played for Middlesex an England.
Not to my knowledge Sqad. Not since he was a youngster.

No problem. I think it's important that these names from the past, who were heroes in their time, should be remembered.
OK folks I must have been mistaken.
Sorry I was thinking of Alec Stewart.
There's an Eric Edrich, a cousin of John, who was wicketkeeper for Lancashire in the late 1940s.
I must admit when I first heard Edrich I thought his name was Bill. Apparently that was another cousin who played for Middlesex and England.
Apparently because Bill played for Middlesex John was encouraged to try elsewhere in case it was thought he might have got preferential treatment, hence he applied for a trial at Surrey. Also John Murray and John Edrich did play for England in the same side.
some grumbled that Alec Stewart got preferential treatment because of who his father was; actually he was mishandled a bit by being asked to keep and open at the same time, which affected both aspects of his game.
Alec Stewart was a very good player in his own right and although his father(Mickey) was well connected in the game he didn’t need any help.
I see not only has John Edrich died but Surrey have anounced that their former bowler Robin Jackman has also passed away.

I thought Jackman had played more than four Tests. I guess Botham kept him out of the England side.
Rip both John and Robin - both superb cricketers....enjoyed watching them live and on the box (or listening to TMS).
agreed, grumpy. As I said, I think the selectors actually treated him worse than they might have. As an opener, he averaged 37 when he was also keeping, 46 when he wasn't, so they wasted his batting ability a bit.
