Again, as already discussed above, referring to someone as a “black” is very offensive in French and English.
It’s not flagged as such in my dictionary but I think if I referred to a black person within earshot as a “black” I’d immediately regret it and hope he hadn’t heard
ich, sorry I thought "black" was the acceptable term, preferred over "coloured" etc. Can someone tell me how to refer to non Caucasian people?
I thought 'black' was the PC term now?
yes it is.

It’s context isn’t it.
And as I said before it feels odd because it’s not as if Webo was the only “noir/black/negru” around.
Quite possibly no offence was meant but I can see how it was taken
And don’t forget in any case English is not the language here so we shouldn’t really be worrying about the actual word “black”. “Negru” sounds like ...

It's not the word black that is the problem it is why was it used.

Demba Ba pointed out that if it was a white man the official wanted booking would he have said 'the white guy'?
How about 'him with the boggly eyes and flecks of spit on his lips'?

Really and truly does anybody think a well-drilled referee, wired for sound and in HD is going to use a word long since binned by polite society?
A miscommunication, a chance to show outrage, an obvious solution then back to pretending to be hurt when running past an opponent.
// Can someone tell me how to refer to non Caucasian people?//
we've told you but you didnt read and so you can ask it over and over again
afro caribbean
or - ask them how they wish to be referred to
Indian certainly dont like Pakistani
( a hindu said to me - I am not a puki - he is. it is his lot that is going around burning things, not us)
I go for anglo saxon. Mama from Bombay - Mhow actually and Papa from Pretoria, Germiston to be exact I wd put that as - almost right
What do I know. We've only got 2 sort of black guys in the town and I can't say I ever heard race mentioned.
"Quite possibly no offence was meant but I can see how it was taken " - that's the problem people are at such a height of sensitivity on this that the remotest thing can be taken the wrong way!
Peter, I'm pretty sure afro-Caribbean is a no no.
i have never heard the N word from any friends in regards to black people save those who i have already mentioned.
BA for Doug.
Positively Pavlovian.
West Indians was early on in my younger days, seems to have been replaced by Afro Caribeans.
// well I've read through this and I'm mystified. Is this really because an official referred to someone as a "black guy" -//
righto!

read the Fransh script for chrissakes - he didnt use "un type noir".
just as you wouldnt be keen on - "crazy guy with fruit machine eyes, luckily there are always two flapping white coats behind him"

if we read - - - we will stop being mystified
well he used the word "negru" which no doubt sounded like the N word. I know, all the world should learn English and they'll be less "racist".
// Peter, I'm pretty sure afro-Caribbean is a no no.//
nope
preferred by my er afro caribbean relations

we are not going froo 100 posts of - "*** was never insulting - ay really dont remember when all this started. and as for eye-ties - they're the ones with the national all white flag innit?"
