For the sake of a few days would it not be better to stay in your own home for the Christmas period? I realise shops and businesses are struggling but this I fear will cause even a longer lockdown in January at the behest of people's mental health

There was a thread that touched on something similar, a few days back, Bobbi. On which, i said much the same as you. Restrictions cannot just be lifted for the festive season then re-introduced afterwards. Not only would it render the present lockdown irrelevant, it would also undermine people's trust in the government's handling of the pandemic. A trust that is wavering on a daily basis.

Absolutely Ken, I'm afraid I didn't see the afore mentioned thread regarding this issue
Not, it'll be fine.

Mr Covid, he knows ALL about Christmas, and will make sure he's definitely NOT infected around that time. He'll probably hide in a Christmas Tree somewhere, just for the duration.

Then, when it's safe to come out, he'll come back and infect you all.

WHAT AN IDIOTIC IDEA!

Lock-down is Lock-down.

Who thought that several household could mingle THAT week, but not THIS week?

Utter lunacy.
Am damned if I'm to cook a festive meal, let alone rushed food shopping for family et al. Xmas decs is Netflix on plasma. Lockdown stet here!
I agree. As a family we have agreed to spend Christmas in our own homes as quite a few still go out to work. I will miss having my children and grandchildren here for Christmas dinner but feel that for this year it will be worth it.

Milo you're right , for a few days the country should lockdown and make the best of it, otherwise we will pay the price
No idea what you imagine will go wrong with an idea from government.

They haven't missed a step in all of this yet, decision and precision all the way from the beginning.

Anyway, we're not at home to Mr Grinch, it's Christmas and that trumps everything.

Pathetic.
Hi Bobbs and all. I shall be seeing all the families during lockdown.

Sat in front of my PC screen of course.

We count our blessings.

Terrible times for an awful lot of people and businesses.
i shall miss my family in part due to this lockdown.

There's always that Sparkly then sitting down after the Christmas fare to watch The Great Escape, arhhhh, nice , lol
Well if we go ahead, the Chinese will be laughing their socks off at us considering they cancelled their Chinese new year without all this debate and fuss.
I think you are correct but I also think that the government is looking at it from the point of view of not criminalising millions. They know that people have had enough and will simply ignore it anyway so I think the strengthening of the tier rules is the stick and the few days over xmas is the carrot.
I know there's many Adults that adore Xmas and look forward to it, me couldn't care two hoots, I've always looked up on it being for kids, and I made sure my two enjoyed themselves when they were very young. Over the years its become more for the adults, so may be this year just for once, (forget it Adults) if you have young kids make sure they enjoy themselves and bring a bit of normality back into their lives, because some have been scared witless this year.
Its not compulsory! Those of us who don't 'do' Christmas anyway will carry on as normal but if I did I certainly wouldn't be inviting the hoards or going visiting this year. And why three households? I can't remember ever having more than two and they were close relatives.
Ha Ha, Its funny its the one time of the year I don't want people coming round. In the early years by the time everyone had finished banging on the door to come in for a visit, the day had gone. :0)
I think it's a brilliant move! Everybody without fail who I talk to when out dog walking say that no matter what Boris says (before this announcement) they are going to see family NO MATTER WHAT ! I think the only reason Boris has done it is because he knows the majority of people (not the doom mongers on here of course) will see their families at Christmas anyway and it cannot possibly be policed, so he had no option! I will be seeing mine as per usual and having a damn good time, all this nonsense has gone on far too long. Never had you down as a scaremonger Bobbie. And sqad you can come on with your LOL LOL LOL's as much as you flamin' well like - I DON'T CARE …….
amazingly I agree with TTT. If you know that people won't do what is best then you have to work out what they will go along with. I used to work with people who were left with quite bad disabilities after stroke. We would get then to a certain level of independence but the maintenance was up to them and their families on the basis of use it or lose it . We knew that they wouldn't spend their days at home struggling with things like dressing themselves or walking as much as they were supported to do in hospital so we would work out individual regimes that gave them and their families a good chance to keep the rehab activities going and at the same time give them enough quality of life so they would keep the exercise up. Same with the Covid precautions.
What is a dame good time at Xmas, to a dam good time the rest of the year. Its only nonsense if you've not lost anyone in you're family to covid, so I doubt the ones that have won't be having a dam good time as you put it.
I think, for us, it isn't and never was, going to come down to what the law said. Whatever we all decide, will be based on what the family think, want and keeping those safe still, who are worried.

"I understand that some of us may be told that we have to stay in lockdown this year and not get together with our relatives. Is there a website where I can register for this service and do we have to pay?"
