I don't see what Carrie Symonds' views has to do with anything. Seems a strange way to get someone to resign, threaten to promote them, presumably beyond their level of ability, and watch them run off to avoid it. Oh well, the fun & games of politics.

No it was't,Cummings had pushed Cain for the post of Chief of Staff.

One view seems to be that people protested about Caine being “promoted”
Another that it was effectively a sideways move at best after a series of disasters and he took the huff

The first view is obviously accurate whatever.
It seems that Johnson tried to keep Cain on board despite being advised it wasn’t a good idea. That just strikes me as so typical of him: indecisive and insecure.

With some regret, I have to say I don't see Boris growing old in #10, in fact looking back I don't think he wanted to be a leader with all that entails, I think he simply wanted to 'wear the hat'.
