In the same way that William Caxton is responsible for all jazz mags?

They merrily go and do game after game that pops up for them to try totally oblivious to the fact these third parties Apps have access to all your information the second you play 'what colour crystal am I ' or 'what character in Game of Thrones am I? Apart from the idiots there is the darker side of society that use FB pages to promote their perversions -and I don't want to even start on FB Marketplace which is just a scammers paradise. So I agree whole-heartedly with the OP -something needs to be done -pronto!

FB isn't responsible for 94% of child abuse images.

royfromaus: "FB isn't responsible for 94% of child abuse images. " - no but it is responsible for 94% of those reported by US tech firms, that is what we are discussing here.
Personally, I'd be destroying Twitter before Facebook, but all social media needs better policing and more transparency from the companies involved. If advertisers had any backbone, they would threaten to tear up contracts with such places if their lack of cooperation with the authorities continues.
End to end encryption (E2EE) means that all our messages, phone calls and video calls cannot be intercepted by crooks, fraudsters, and scammers. It means our communications stay private, and data cannot be stolen and miss used.
Our politicians have had (E2EE) for decades on diplomatic channels.
Everyone with a internet connected device should have the right to privacy which (E2EE) ensures. It is easy to implement, and is here to stay.

As far as the authorities are concerned, every citizen being able to protect their privacy means that Governments, spy agencies and surveillance agencies have a harder job of snooping on us all.

So they want force computer and phone operating system makers to give them a key or a backdoor which will let them spy on everyone again.

Obviously most sensible people do not want the keys to their privacy to be given away. So the authorities are using stories like the one in the link, to fear monger. (E2EE) Is being associated with criminality and cruelty.

The knee jerk call to ban FaceBook totally misses what the authorities want. They don’t want FB banned (POTUS and UK Gov would be lost without it), they want FB to remain, but they want to be able to read hear and see our private communications.

We should not let them.

sunk, for the most part I agree but if people should not expect privacy on the insidious Facebook etc. People should be told that anything they publish on Twitface etc is publicly available and leave it up to them.
Tora,
WhatsApp, FB Messenger and Instagram are the communication services which use use E2EE and which the authorities want to be able to snoop on. FaceBook owns all 3 services which is why the story is aimed at FaceBook.

The actual FaceBook website is not encrypted. Users can private message, or set up private groups, but FaceBook can and does monitor them. And that information can and is routinely handed to the police.
Criminals use burner phones, fake accounts, VPNs and the dark web to hide their activities.
E2EE will have very little impact on them, but it will guard innocent people from fraud and scams.
Never used Facebook or Twitter or any other site except for AB and Amazon. Fine by me.
