//Good example from the judge, thank's judge. Judge is saying the virus doesnt kill peopel they just die of it. Er...// That's not what the judge said at all (as I'm sure you know). My criticism is of the pejorative language being used to promote hysteria. Young people are told not to "kill their granny". If they pass the virus on to their granny and she dies as a...

The population of the UK is just under 66million, which puts your second link in perspective dannyk.
Margaret, accepted, but I was just countering the idea that no young persons die fro Covid 10.
The notion that young people are suddenly being slain in their thousands is fanciful.

Current figures for the UK show that 89.3% of those who have died were aged 65 and over. Another 9.5% were aged 45 to 64, leaving just 1.2% aged under 45. There have been just four deaths of children aged 14 or under.

The article that Danny provides a link to says that 759 people aged under 50 in the USA. There have been 208,000 deaths in the USA, so the 759 represent just 0.36% - a much lower proportion than in the UK. It is simply no use running headlines such as "Young people are developing Covid-19 at significant rates—and hundreds have died" unless those figures are put into perspective. Of course hundreds have died - probably many thousands worldwide. But the risk of serious symptoms or death among the young is tiny.

//I agree that the numbers are low but should we encourage young people to just succumb to Covid 19?//

No of course we shouldn't. But the plain fact is that they are very, very unlikely to do so. The strategy of trying to keep everybody free of the virus because some people will suffer seriously is flawed. The people who need to be protected (and who feel the need of that protection) should receive it - properly. But essentially everybody must be given the information to help them make their own decision. Keeping people away from each other by law is not sustainable either nationally or locally and in any case as soon as they are "released" the virus will resume its spread. To keep on doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different outcomes borders on lunacy.
Exactly Cloverjo, but the students DON'T do what you have quite rightly suggested and that is the problem in a world of a very contagious in which the only defence is quarantine and arguably a dodgy isolation programme.
One doesn't need statistics one needs to see and read about what is going on in the cities, towns and gatherings.
Students may not get it but they can certainly transmit it..even to granny..
Sqad //students may not get it but they can certainly transmit it.//
A very valid point, but hey there are those who think we oldies are not worth protecting,
"To keep on doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different outcomes borders on lunacy."

Unfortunately it's the only game in town until politicians figure out a way to back up gracefully without admitting their catastophic error.
There will be no blame laid at their collective door if it can possibly be avoided.
They also need to overcome their addiction to control, not an easy thing to do for egomniacs.
Danny, perhaps we are not but who decides NJ or Cloverjo?
Maybe they just think you should look after yourself, danny?
Roy, I do look after myself.I have been shielding since March on the advice of the NHS.
Don't forget that not all young adults are fit and healthy. Some of them are bound to have medical problems.
I thought that we were saying on a previous thread that ''all lives matter''
//however it's very few but I suppose it's enough for the 'one death is too many brigade' I despair.//

Let's hope it's not your child or grandchild who croaks then.
If lockdowns meant reduced pensions and benefits (and they will eventually) I reckon we'd see some different answers on here.
Spicerack// reduced pensions and benefits//
And how do you think that these can be reduced?Did you mean to say that they would not be increased?
It is my opinion that any student that wishes to carry on their studies should be allowed to go back in, and back out again too.

But there again, I am of similar opinion for the adult population. If they want to continue working, let them go in to work where any half decent or better employer will have provided the resources to do the job, and not merely officially employed someone but in reality expect them to provide their own working conditions as if they were hired as self employed contractors.

As for those who are considered vulnerable, let them take precautions and the authorities should help them to do so.
No, Danny.
It isn’t just the virus it’s also cancer, heart conditions and mental health issues going untreated which will increase the mortality figures as time rolls on
I am in my late 80’s. This is not “living” . Being in Scotland, our government would quite like us oldies to die off so when they get their indy2 they will have more chance of success, with more young ones able to vote. So not all negative, after all !
Spicerack, You don't honestly believe that any government would be silly enough to reduce pensions and benefits.
The virus will rip through the universities and they will ask the students to isolate, but most of them won't (unless locked in their rooms) and the virus will keep spreading.

One Scottish university already has more than 100 infected students.
