What does that actually mean?

To me it suggests withdrawing money, but given BLM want to abolish the police, why use a mealymouthed word such as ‘defunding’.

Have BLM suggested an alternative to the police, or is their ultimate aim lawlessness?

DD //is their ultimate aim lawlessness?//
Isn't that the aim of all anarchists?
Cutting 25,000 Police jobs would undoubtedly save a lot of money that could be spent on better things.

Unfortunately we have tried that experiment already, and it doesn’t work. You’d have to be made to defund the police, and even madder to actually do it.
Gromit //could be spent on better things//
What do you consider better than the protection of life and property, which is the first aim of the police.?
* You’d have to be mad to suggest to defund the police, and even madder to actually do it.

I am not suggesting spending it on better things.
why on earth are you asking a crowd of white supremacists on aryan bank? what makes you think you will get a sensible answer?

defund is divert or convert funds to activities thought to be more socially useful - so you dont get a rebate on your local taxes

and no anarchism is not devoted to a lawless societ
it goes for less central involvement in local affairs

I am not suggesting spending it on better things// well that isnt defunding is it? that is dissolving
The police have got a bad reputation right now for the obvious reasons like bashing people up at protests.
The day to day minor stuff they couldn’t give two hoots about, in my area anyway.
I don’t agree with ‘defunding’ them, but they should be made to do their jobs - or leave.
Can we stop pretending that this mob is anything less than the reincarnation of the anarchists of latter years, they've hi-jacked a convenient excuse, I doubt they they have any regard for the dead Americans.
Gromit // I'm not suggesting spending it on better things.//
Then what did this mean?
//money that could be spent on better things.//
I agree, zebo. I’d guess most of them are there for a fight rather than a passion for black rights.

Supplementary question.

In addition to “defunding” the police, they also want to stop capitalism.

Are these two aims alone enough to prove they’re delusional and irrelevant?

Are these two aims alone enough to prove they’re delusional and irrelevant? //

in the aims of BLM, such as they are, the 2 are interconnected. the Police are said to uphold a grossly unfair capitalist society focused on the ownership and acquisition of property. if that is abolished, the police cease to be relevant. allegedly.

// Cutting 25,000 Police jobs would undoubtedly save a lot of money that could be spent on better things. //

I was trying to be ironic.
I did not agree with the Conservative Government defunding the police. And I don’t agree with defunding it now.
And better things is subjective. The Government saved a fortune by not employing 25,000 coppers for 10 years. I can’t really see what better things they spent the saving on.
// save a lot of money that could be spent on better things //

actually that's what BLM themselves say. in an audit of emergency calls, what callers most needed wasn't a tooled-up copper, but a social worker, or a mental health advocate, or a street outreach worker in the field of homelessness.
Dont they also want to abolish prisons?
//Dont they also want to abolish prisons? //

yes. the argument runs something like this:-

Most people who have caused serious harm aren’t currently in prison and never will be. The Grenfell Tower fire tragically took many working-class lives – the majority black and brown lives – yet nobody has been held accountable. If we look at incidences of sexual violence, we know it’s powerful people – CEOs, workplace managers, artists, sports coaches and religious leaders – who are overwhelmingly protected and continue to cause harm. A person is labelled ‘violent’ because of who they are, not what they have done.
I see.

So how is the ordinary black person (who has more crimes committed against them by other black people than old whitey) going to gain by having no one locked up for murder drugs rape or whatever and no plod to call when they are being raped, attacked, robbed or whatever.

Just goes to show it is all just left wing anarchists.

I will now await jim to come along and tell us how wonderful they are.
Some defunding might improve the "service" mind. Reducing the canteen facilities might mean that we don't have so many fat arrisses huffing and puffing in the name of justice....and the make up fund could be dumped, let em buy their own nail varnish and face glitter. The bill for the ever changing "logos" and snowflake inclusivity banners and flags must be a tidy sum as well...scrap it.
And the nine hundred (probably more by now) officers searching the internet for 'hate' crimes.
