As, alas. there are a few idiots all too ready to make political capital out of an unforseen tragedy it would seem our current UK Government is managing quite well.
Whilst denigrating the efforts of those in power here there were many who held aloft South Korea as a shining example of how to eradicate this virus. Sadly it would appear that it is not yet all over for S. Korea and China are experiencing 4,000 new cases a day. So much for easing lock down in Wuhan. Have they jumped the gun? It is obvious that population density plays a great part as well as many other considerations but it demonstrates that no nation can feel smug or complacent as to how they have fared during this Global emergency.

well as you know retro we are infested with anti British popinjays willing to utilise anything to denigrate us.
Not sure where you are getting your figures from.

South Korea reported +40 new cases yesterday, and China +1.
Obviously these are self reported figures (like the UK) so they might be inaccurate. But 41 to 4000 is a massive discrepancy.

gromit//Not sure where you are getting your figures from//
Obviously from the link posted by the OP.
If you follow world news generally, More or less every country is criticising its Govt for the handling of the situation / lack of PPE etc. Those who criticise our Govt should be more worldly wise!
Ignore that .
that was to Gromit.
It might help if you read your own link.
// In South Korea, 40 newly confirmed cases — the biggest daily jump in nearly 50 days //

The UK confirmed 2004 new cases yesterday.
https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

Not sure how you can twist that to the UK doing so much better than them.

Presumably I will now be mauled for being anti-British because I have presented a few numbers.

The link posted by the OP says 40 new cases The OP claims 4000.

I do apologise. I misread CHILE for China. It is rather immaterial as the basis of the thread is saying that it's not over yet and the toll is rising in certain areas particularly the Americas.

//In the Americas, from Mexico to Chile, health officials were reporting surging coronavirus cases and overwhelmed hospitals.

Mexico’s health department reported 501 deaths from the coronavirus on Tuesday, a new one-day high, and 3,455 more infections.

Its daily death toll is approaching that of the US, at about 620.

Brazil currently leads in daily deaths with more than 800.

Authorities in Chile said their intensive care units were near full capacity, with about 4,000 new cases being confirmed daily.//
Managing quite well, tell that to the families /kids that have lost mom/dad/brother/sister who worked for the NHS with no PPE, storing out of date PPE for three years.
// well as you know retro we are infested with anti British popinjays willing to utilise anything to denigrate us// - and the madness returns

two things which we all HOPED wouldnt happen but did
( third one from this Nostradamus is that the vaccine will be found not to work - oo-er Mrs! oh and fourth - ther will be animal reservoir - found in minks in holland)

appreciable carrier rate - asymptomatic patients who are slow to clear the virus
and some are super spreaders -

I think it was justified or er reasonable to wait and see if either occurred. The other thing is - locally we have had a carrier to hasnt cleared it and hasnt infected anyone (yet)

All very tragic. Try living in Chile at the moment and then compare government action/inaction.

perhaps nobody dare go near him/her?
I think the OP misread the link. 4000 was the figure from India. South Korea had 40. China isn't even mentioned.

I'll give RC the benefit of the doubt and stick with "misread".

Lessons must always be learnt when an unexpected crisis looms out the blue.
Tell us what you think the government should now be planning and stockpiling for in 2027 and 2041. What type of equipment/antidotes and how much of it will be required on those dates in the future?
Get the answers to those and you might find a job vacancy soon in No10 if mob rule prevails.
Apologies, I didn't update the thread and missed the new posts while reading the link. Ignore my ppst.
// It is rather immaterial as the basis of the thread is saying that it's not over yet //

oops ya narty bye
yes it is central - china you have the large post infectious population and whether it has generated carriers and what effect THEY will have - and whether they can re-infect ( second wave in same people) and this all feeds into Herd immnity - is it a myth

and Chile - prime meat hur hur hur - and the 'standard' model applies - both before ( large R number) and after ( low R number) lockdown.
Lockdown - if it reduces numbers as predicted, a decent proportion of AB are saying " there you are you see, the numbers change before your very eyes, and THAT alone shows modelling is crap"

oh well I can breathe again

No doubt about it. I did read China instead of Chile and have admitted my error and hope I have apologised to those concerned satisfaction. :-)
Retrocop,
It is clear the virus reached South America later than it hit Europe. So the South America figures are rising as our figures are lowering.
On the 10th April Chile reported 500 new cases, and the UK reported 8,600.

I am not arguing the UK is doing any worse than Chile, but I don’t think you can say Chile are doing worse than us when they are clearly at a different earlier stage than we are. You cannot make a comparison yet.
