Michael Leary has been accused of encouraging racism.

But he's right, isn't he?

When it comes to safety, what's wrong with profiling?

I haven't been brainwashed, just educated (believe it or not). Feel free to correct me though, if you have different proof...
And I didn't say "in the world", unfortunately:-)
The very first post by andy hughes was whataboutery.
'Educated' by a bird in dungarees, with short hair, on a Common Purpose course. God help us.
If you say so, my love:-) whatever makes you feel better xx

Were you there then?
Unless people are burying their heads in the sand by denying 99.9 % of terrorist attacks are by young Asian men, then I don’t think O’Leary is being unreasonable in this instance
It appears that many bury their heads in the sand when it comes to sorting big problems out, and when someone like Leary speaks out, or Boris for that matter, you get the luvies saying you can't do this and you can't do that, well someone has too make a stand. Big problems need action now, not next year or the year after.
Bobbisox - // Unless people are burying their heads in the sand by denying 99.9 % of terrorist attacks are by young Asian men, then I don’t think O’Leary is being unreasonable in this instance ..

I am not denying provable facts - but I am taking issue with the methods being suggested to deal with them.

I have said already that an easy steer towards radical Islam is the notion that Westerners hate and fear Muslims - so why adopt a high-profile persecution system that simply underlines that perception, and, ironically, plays into the hands of the terrorists that the system is supposed to identify.
Basically Andy we can do nothing right when dealing with the situation, especially when the Mosques say and do nothing at all so it takes a Boris or a O’Leary to trumpet the cause here
You made that stat up, didn't you Bobbi? Don't worry, it doesn't matter, because whatever the correct number is it's of no use.

The more useful stat when it comes to profiling using O'Leary's criteria would be: what percent of "males of a Muslim persuasion" who are single and travelling alone are terrorists? If the answer is very small then it's not a very useful criteria, and other intelligence is likely to be far more useful. The fact that there are so few successful terrorist attacks on aircraft shows that our protectors seem to be quite capable without O'Leary's "help".

It's not enough for a Boris or an O'Leary to 'trumpet the cause here' - they need to come up with a screening system that works effectively, and then keep nice and quiet about it.

Coming up with a deeply flawed system with the built-in by-product of Islamist propaganda is hardly being helpful.
Its far easier to criticise / object to a solution to any problem, than to come up with a solution. When it comes to terrorists , for me you can throw any rule book out the window, like they do.
Ellipsis, do you have a ball park figure of the percentages of young men and their background and ethnicity who’ve carried out attacks in modern time?you’re right , I don’t as the only ones I’ve heard of are those I’ve mentioned, I’d be curious if you could find out though ?
I've heard on the radio this morning (in relation to Coronavirus) that there are around 10,000 flights and over a million people in the air all the time, around the world.

Here is a timeline of airliner bombing attacks:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_airliner_bombing_attacks

There have been three in the last 10 years.

You can see from the numbers above that "a ball park figure of the percentages of young men and their background and ethnicity who’ve carried out attacks in modern time" is very small indeed.

Of course, the stat that's harder to find is the number of attacks that were successfully prevented. But the fact is that they are being successfully prevented, without O'Leary's input.
^ There could be many that have failed, ( not prevented) there are planes that have disappeared with no explanation, and I for one don't believe the downing of the commercial flight in Iran was an accident, regardless of their own on board.
Mr O’Leary is right. It stands to reason that if it is widely known that stringent security measures are in place anyone contemplating wreaking havoc upon the travelling public will be aware that he is more likely to be discovered and hence less likely to try. The fact is - and, like it or not, it is a fact - the vast majority of acts of terrorism in today’s world - worldwide - are perpetrated by the followers of Islam so why anyone gives priority to religious sensitivities over safety is quite beyond me. When the safety of innocent people is compromised there’s no virtue in objecting to profiling. That attitude resulted in grooming gangs being ignored for years.

Incidentally, for anyone who thinks Nigerians are unlikely to be Muslims - the population of Nigeria is almost 50% Muslim - so if you spot A Nigerian called Mohammed you can practically guarantee he’s one of their number.
//Incidentally, for anyone who thinks Nigerians are unlikely to be Muslims - the population of Nigeria is almost 50% Muslim - so if you spot A Nigerian called Mohammed you can practically guarantee he’s one of their number.//

So should Nigerians be profiled as well?
Why do you think ethnicity is relevant, Mozz?
Yes . It appears some on this thread fail to grasp the fact that one of the most pernicious terrorist groups is Nigerian. Never heard of a muslim terrorist faction called boko haram ?
