Its a good question, and a difficult one. First off if my memory serves me well, when a Wetherspoons opened near me some years back now, and if you like first came on the stage as a pub chain, they promoted cheap beer/drinks, and in my view in turn promoted heavy drinking. That said I don't believe that young children should be exposed to such adult activities in...

It's conditional:
'pub managers can stop any customer buying more than two alcoholic drinks each, if they have kids with them.'
They have always had the right to refuse to serve alcohol anyway

Yes they have Shoota,so why are ‘Spoons saying this I wonder, could it be that it’s now a ruling and not up to the Managers discretion anymore ?
I think anyone responsible wouldn't have more than a couple of pints if accompanied with young children anyway, so it sounds fair to me. If they want to get rat faced, get a babysitter (or better still, don't have kids)
Spoons tread a firm path (or Tim Martin does). I think it's a great idea and the reverse of what you're asking as It's a rule to protect the vast majority of responsible drinkers from having their leisure time spoilt.

Of course, said parents could have had eight pints before going to wetherspoons!

^^^ I didn’t say I was either for or against it, as it happens, I’m all for it
Well, you did ask whether it was a case of the responsible suffering for the irresponsible when it's actually the irresponsible (parents with kids) who will suffer.
I don't read it as an absolute rule Bobbs, I think it is a rule that can be used should parents ignore unruly kids or get pie eyed and unable to look after them at the managers discretion.

What I asked in my header does not indicate my preference, it merely opens up an option for and against
Question Author
Shoota, I agree but it seems Spoons have brought it in across the board, there’s nothing worse than either being in a pub here or on holiday and seeing irresponsible parents necking it and their kids running wild
I hope I didn't insinuate that I felt you didn't approve of the rule Bobbi, I was just commenting with my own personal opinion.

Not at all Mozz, I take on opinions be them different to mind or not
'What I asked in my header does not indicate my preference'

No it doesn't as it asks a question. But that question is skewed to suggest that the responsible are being inconvenienced.

A neutral question would have asked 'Is anyone being inconvenienced by this decision?'
It's their pub so they can refuse to serve anyone as long as it's not illegal/unlawful to do so.
Question Author
Yes TCL but it seems it’s a 2 pint ruling for all now ?
Any parents failing to keep their offspring under control should be asked to leave, whether they have had a drink or two or not.
Question Author
Totally agree Mamya
there should be no saucepans in a battle cruiser anyway if you ask me.
Question Author
Haha 3Ts, that’s possibly as ‘ clear’ as my header and it made me laugh anyway :0)
I suppose it would stop the type of customer who wants to stay in a pub drinking all day while their kids run around. A responsible parent wouldn’t mind only having a couple of drinks.
//Any parents failing to keep their offspring under control should be asked to leave, whether they have had a drink or two or not.//

Quite correct, mamy.

it's not much use to other customers who are faced with unruly children spoiling their enjoyment if the keepers of those children linger for two hours over their two drinks. Even more problematic are the "Mummies" groups who meet in pubs and coffee shops. They usually have an average of two children each with them and simply sit chatting to each other whilst their Little Darlings run amok. The Wetherspoons' rule (if indeed it is a rule and if it is enforced) will not address that.

People who go to pubs, restaurants and cafes need to understand that not everybody is content with being disturbed by young children "expressing themselves". There are plenty of places where they can take their children to do that. They need to keep their children under control wher people are eating and drinking.
