MPs are claiming to be receiving hate-mails with threats of death & rape on a regular basis. Why do the police not charge these senders; are mobile phones in the UK not registered to the user?

as I understand it, hate mail as such is not illegal.
Only contract phones link to the user, 'pay-as-you-go mobiles are anonymous.
Well quite. It's serious and needs the law taking it to be so. But what a shame to try to use it to pin the blame on innocent members of parliament though. Terrible behaviour, presumably allowed under parliamentary privilege.
You’d puke if you seen some of the stuff sent to the Scots first minister

In Germany, ALL mobile phones, including pay as you go, have to be registered, so I don't think anonymous calling is possible - from within the country at least, we do get nuisance calls from Indian call centres though.

ludwig; John Nimmo in your link looks about as dangerous as a dead sheep, what was is sentence I wonder. What a creep.

They are all inadequate saddos after all, and often look the part. However, inadequate saddos can be extremely dangerous, and need to be dealt with accordingly.
It's difficult to imagine the mentality of scum who do this, but really it's only the medium that has changed not the message.

I'm sure plod will prosecute if they can, but I suspect many will come from people well savvy with how to avoid identification.
Nimmo was sentenced to twenty-seven months in gaol.

That's good news corby
I've got a pay-as-you-go phone (£12 from Tesco's) and apparently I can withhold my number if I wish - never actually done it. I've heard that criminals often buy these phones so they can't be traced to them. Anxiously awaiting a knock on the door from my lovely neighbour - a copper. :)

OG; as the Donald once said of someone else; 'He's a very low I.Q. individual'.
I think he's more to be pitied than censured.
Is that the same ‘The Donald’ who has been challenged to an intelligence Test, numerous times, and always chickens out - Bigly :-)
Jordain, they are called burners and used by drug dealers.
