Not really. There is no need for them to threaten court action. The Prime Minister has no option but to comply with the law, however much it irks him. As much as I want to see a swift and proper Brexit, if politicians begin to pick and choose which laws they will comply with and which they won't we're at the top of a very slippery slope. It's ludicrous to suggest he will not comply.

Any new deal based on May's/the EU's pile of guano isn't going to be Brexit. If remoaner MPs are just using this all as an excuse to stop Brexit it's unlikely to be sufficiently remain for them, and certainly insufficient for anyone wanting us to leave. So maybe the only damage is what affect more uncertainty and delay causes. During which time we may get a GE.

We can wait, but it's well beyond a joke already.

Politicians don't normally feel a need to pick and choose which laws to comply with. They just change existing or introduce new as suits. Needs must when the devil drives and all that. But practically speaking, I suspect Johnson would need to resign as party leader to avoid having to ask for more misery for the nation.

The government is in a state of paralysis. No fault of Boris but the wretched FTPA. Such a scenario was predicted by many at the time.

If I were Boris I would resign as PM, but not as Tory leader, and await events.Corbyn will be unable to govern unless the entire remainder of the opposition and the Tory rats join him.

The link is fine Webbo, and the point set in stone. I was reading it earlier and just lay low and kept my powder dry. If the remainiacs get a sniff of it they will launch another kamikaze attack. The first letter in the link is quite succinct, but other comments are reassuring as well.

Not that I know much about this sort of chicanery but what sort of kamikaze attack could be launched ? Either we are already out, or it needs the Queen's "ok" based on the PM's advice. As long as BJ knows he has the option not to give the advice it doesn't get to be law. So no extension. Mind you the workings of politics defy all reason it seems. Perhaps it doesn't count if the month starts with an "S".

But there was nothing to stop Johnson calling an election when he became leader. He has only himself to blame. He’s adopted a confrontational attitude from the start and shouldn’t be surprised at the reaction

There was. It's called the Fixed Term Parliament Act. Prime Ministers do not get to call an election whilst it is in force.
