mushroom - my wife's uncle was one of the first on the beaches - he was driving an armoured digger to clear the wire and allow the following soldiers to get access to the beach.

As he drove onto the beach, he came under a hail of machine gun fire from the German forces on the cliffs, and he shouted to his gunner to get down out of sight, but his colleague was already dead, and had fallen forward under the digger tracks.

My wife's uncle was just twenty-one years old.

His bravery was just that of one man, multiply that by the thousands of others who acted in a similar way, and it makes the likes of Jeremy Corbyn and Vince Cable look like the people they are - small-minded nasty attention seekers who carelessly abuse the freedoms so hard won for them.

They - and all other protesters, should hang their heads in shame.
//His bravery was just that of one man, multiply that by the thousands of others who acted in a similar way...//

ordinary people, placed in extraordinary situations, and ordered to do extraordinary things. we can call it bravery and it probably was - but at the time, they were just there, and without thought of consequence they did what they could, while they could, giving of their best.
I don’t think it’s fair to tar all protesters over the week as being disrespectful of D Day commemorations.
Those who plan to protest at the ceremonies yes fair enough, but there are all sorts of people involved: some at blatantly anti American full stop, but some are using the opportunity to express their unease and displeasure at some of this current president’s attitudes and policies and without wishing to sound TOO pompous, that right of to be able to express dissent PEACEFULLY was something we were fighting for then. We should regards that as a positive and not as a weakness.
mushroom - // we can call it bravery and it probably was … //

Thanks - I think I will.
ich - // I don’t think it’s fair to tar all protesters over the week as being disrespectful of D Day commemorations. //

I think you have a point - but sadly, the protestations, whatever their roots, will all be tarred with being against the spirit of the commemorations, rightly or wrongly.

The phrase "There's a time and a place …" comes to mind.
bang on AH, it's sad that these popinjays cannot look beyond their searing hatred of the current incumbent of the Office to do the decent thing for once. Still, along with the OP I doubt they know the meaning of the word.
HM is making a speech about it right now diddly, you'd do well to listen.
Am I right in thinking that Corbyn and Cable refused to attend the state banquet? If so they are beneath contempt, more so Cable. Liberal my April!
Jackdaw - // Am I right in thinking that Corbyn and Cable refused to attend the state banquet? If so they are beneath contempt, more so Cable. Liberal my April! //

I believe so - don't imagine they are missed!
no great loss JD.
Half of those who voted in the US Presidential election voted for Mr Trump. The half that didn't and many many elsewhere denounce him as a bigoted racist.

Half of those who voted in the UK referendum voted to leave. The half that didn't denounce them as bigoted racists.

Spot the difference? There isn't one. In each case the half that lost believe their opinion is the right one and counts for more than the votes of the other half. A further similarity is the half that lost cannot accept the situation in which they find themselves without hurling insults.

The UK welcomes US Presidents. It's become a bit of a tradition. We don't stop welcoming them when the present office holder happens to be somebody not universally popular.
Quite right NJ.

There must be a mass production of dummies in circulation as an inordinate amount of them have been spat out....
An odd statistic of D Day is that as many French civilians died as Allied invaders.
It’s also worth reflecting that Churchill was most reluctant to proceed at all.
Considering where he has got to in life he's one hell of a clever moron...

2 Oct 2018 - “My father gave me a very small loan in 1975, and I built it into a ... would be worth $140 million in today's dollars and that much of it was never repaid. ... claim that “The president's father gave him an initial $1 million loan, which he paid back.”

yup as you can see, he did it all himself
an his day-dee was a share cropper or something
// Am I right in thinking that Corbyn and Cable refused to attend the state banquet? If so they are beneath contempt, more so Cable. Liberal my April! //

According to tonight’s BBC news Mr Corbyn intends to speak tomorrow at a protest rally against Mr Trump’s visit here. Makes you proud to be British …

Devoid of respect and devoid of dignity, the lot of them.
Question Author
Anyone of you defending this visit noticed the Queen talking through gritted teeth? No, I thought not because you don't want to notice. I know that Prince Phillip has officially retired from public duties but don't you think he would fancy a good nosh-up if he could stomach the company?
// An odd statistic of D Day is that as many French civilians died as Allied invaders. // do you have a ref for that -
even the first days casualties seem hard ot come by

The Diepee Raid ( lessons will be learnt etc pt 1) was a complete disaster. 1500 allied dead and 5 Germans
of those the Germand DID not kill but took prisoner
they laughed at them and said - if that is how you do it - you will never land in Europe - ever !
Churchill thought they would be massacred on the beaches as a replay of trench warfare
diddlydo, Prince Phillip can have, as you put it, a good 'nosh up' any time he likes.... and no, I didn't notice the queen talking through gritted teeth ... probably because she wasn't.
Naomi //Devoid of respect and devoid of dignity// talking about Cable and Corbyn.
We could say the same about Trump but you wouldn’t, of course.
Prince Philip will be 98 next week. He has an excuse. Also, the Queen always speaks through gritted teeth. It's what she was brought up to. So does Charles.
