/// The British Home Office, meanwhile, said 20 migrants on two boats were intercepted Saturday off the Kent Coast. The migrants, including a 12-year-old, were handed to immigration officials in Dover. The group said they were from Iraq and Iran. ///

Interesting that on LBC radio early today, a female 'migrant charity worker' said that the Government should set up an immigration centre in Calais, so that it would be safer for these migrants to apply for UK asylumn and if granted they should be given a free ferry ticket so that they could join their UK communities already here in the UK.

Unbelievable!!!!! You just couldn't make it up.

I've no idea, Tora. Just niggles me when people spout off about things on an uninformed basis. Especially when they've been informed before.
“If we had an immigration centre in Calais it'd be much quicker to refuse entry to economic migrants, making the rejection official, sooner.”

We don’t need an immigration centre in Calais. The idea of requesting asylum is to seek safety. When I last looked France (and other EU countries through which the migrants must have passed) were as safe as houses. The UN Convention on the status of refugees (which trumps anything the EU might publish) states quite clearly that refugees lose their status if they do not report to the authorities in the first safe country they arrive in.

Whether or not the OP has a “has a vile racist agenda” is not for me to say but it’s not apparent from this question. Highlighting the seemingly incredulous notion that we should somehow set up a branch of Croydon’s Lunar House in Calais and suggesting “you couldn’t make it up” is perfectly valid for the News section. The UK is a big enough laughing stock internationally as it is without providing even more fun at the taxpayers’ expense.

Great idea! They're officially refused entry ... and so they climb aboard a boat ...

Next!
“If we had an immigration centre in Calais it'd be much quicker to refuse entry to economic migrants, making the rejection official, sooner.” Fantastic idea, and I'm sure that all these illegal types would queue up politely, quietly, and patiently waiting to be interviewed for a chance to get to the UK and start to leech away at the bountiful system awaiting them due, in part, to people with views and attitudes espoused by certain posters on this and other similar threads.
spath - he is being dramatic.
So they climb aboard a boat and when picked up the authorities have no excuse for bringing them here as they do now. You are quite right, it's a great idea.
Poor old Sp.
Why is the word "intercepted' used in these stories? Surely the word "intercept" implies obstruction, prevention, or hindrance. These boats are not intercepting; they are aiding and abetting this continuing illegal invasion...Is "invasion" a little too strong a word to some people I wonder?
Some responses here seem to suggest if the UK opted to return them to France, because they weren't entitled to be in the UK, they'd object because, what's the point, they'll just try again anyway. They almost seem to be implying that believe letting them stay must be the answer. All one can do is be vigilant and ensure the paperwork is sorted as early as possible.
Hello sp.

Quite agree, ano the old git* has his agenda, and supporting liberal causes is not on his list.

Don’t abandon the thread, sp; otherwise you leave the field open to the rest of the pack.

(*It’s only three spaces!)
^How many warnings do you think you'll get?
Don’t worry Spicerack (“How many warnings do you think you'll get?), if it gets past three someone will count them for you.
OG at 18:00 Mon, I don’t think it would work like that. They would be brought here, as they are now – that’s if they were caught, of course - and then they’d have the ‘right’ to appeal.
No appeal system mentioned in my link.
