I liked this bit:-

"I think we should move away from that culture to where judges look like an ordinary man and so that the courts look humane. We should simply believe that if a judge appears wearing a suit, it will not make them less of a judge,”
Are wigs worn in any other courts but those of colonies, ex-colonies and the UK itself ? Is there any evidence that the wigs have any other notable effect than to attract criticism/ridicule ?
It's time the legal profession in this country ditched the fancy dress. It's a bit silly.
This seems to be about money. Not really getting their priorities in order.

Be interesting to read the views of those in the legal profession: New Judge,Peter Pedent (shock horror!) and Barmaid etc.

In particular,if the judges appeared less formal would the court experience be less oppressive perhaps?

Should judges appear like 'an ordinary man' (whatever that means!)
oh is it time for ( une blague arrrive)
in a colonial court, they were dressed up to the nines and suddently the doors flew open and a heavily draped official scarves , coats, woolies, bobble cap, and glove ran up to the women and jiggled their bazooomz
nothing else seems to happen .... ( fill in more description as needed)
and the observer asked what on earth was THAT
and was told

PP - muffled titter (groan!).Good though ;-)

Retro - loved it!
I don't know about looking more humane, but they won't look any different from the next guy on the Zimbabwe Clapham omnibus. Might reduce respect for the bod making all the judgements over others.

I always remember a case a few years back when I was representing the Housing Association. We had applied for both a Possession Order and a Demotion of tenancy.

This was heard in the judge's chambers (and just wearing a suit).

He turned to the young female Defendant and said:

'Do you know what is meant by a Demoted Tenancy'.

Defendant shakes her head.

Judge: 'Well, let me put it in laymans terms'.It effectively means you become a tenant at will'...

The look on the Defendant's face! Classic!!

You see, without a wig the judge becomes human!
