How crucial have these losses been and could this be a reason for the increase in knife crime in the capital?

//Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, said: “The Tories are in complete denial about the effects of austerity. Youth services play a crucial role in our communities. If the government are serious about protecting our young people, then they should put their money where their mouth is.”//

Retro //What few amenities for youths we now have left in our London Borough were vandalised and trashed by youths years ago!!//

You see, boredom is a terrible thing...
"Now you couldn't let your kids out to play football etc at the age we went out."

Football (or any other ball game) should not be played in the street. It's contrary to the Highways Act, 1971.Prior to that there was similar legislation forbidding it (which I can't be bothered to look up). There are plenty of parks and recreation grounds where football can be played.

I didn't belong to a youth club. Incredible as it may seem I didn't go out knifing people as an alternative. I guess I was just odd.

Seems to be a roundabout but it's broken. :-(
NJ - but we still played out with footballs, our bikes, pogo sticks...no one stopped us. I'm a 70's kid.
as a kid all i needed was a plank of wood, some wheels and a packet of crisps and i was occupied for the day. These days kids want iphones, northface clothes and tracksuit bottoms to have fun.
Most of my friends in my street joined the local ATC Squadron. We were taught to fly gliders, shoot target rifles orienteering, survival and DISCIPLINE.
There are still loads of Army Cadet Force detachments,ATC Squadrons and Navy Cadet Units in our area. Two ACF detachments within half a mile of my house.

The latter is the sticking point. Many youngsters just don't like being told what to do!!
Although a very necessary precaution, especially in this day and age,it may be considered that youth facililities have to be supervised by qualified youth leaders and it could be that many potential volunteers cannot be arrrrsed to go through vetting procedures, Health and Safety, risk assessment,First Aid training etc etc. Red Tape has a lot to answer for.
The krays did National Service cane out worse than when they went in!
I had dancing, judo, swimming, gymnastics....but they all cost money!
LMAO just imagine.... good parenting makes a good kid.

That is why I do not feel National Service is a good idea. Army instructors are very much inhibited as how to instil discipline these days and rebellious recruits would end up in Colchester or the Drill pigs in front of a ooooman rights tribunal.

Indeed retro re:National Service.
Ummmm, //I had dancing, judo, swimming, gymnastics....but they all cost money! //

There's very little unemployment at the moment so presumably the parents are working.

I think people make excuses for feral youth.
It is morally wrong and in my mind, twisted.. to force new age youths into a militant service.

Because if you work one hour a week you're classed as employed by the UK tory Gov even if it's a minimum wage.
Dianne Abacus has the right idea to keep her son out of trouble. She ensures he goes to a private school out of her catchment area so he doesn't have to attend the local secondary modern with all the n'er do wells pushing the gear.

For someone is a pro Europe remainer you would not have liked being born in, Greece,Spain,Switzerland,Italy,Holland,Germany, Poland or Austria!!
You're right, i wouldn't have.. Being pro Europe doesn't mean i wish to live in Spain and have national service though.
I like England. I like England being part of the EU, i like England not having forced national service.

I do not think forced national service would sort out the issue of youth crime. It has, and always will be, present.

There was a reason why it was scrapped. Because it was a waste of effort and made the military look untidy and sloppy. Trying to herd all these kids up.
