Beginning on April Fool's Day, it will be compulsory to provide proof of age in order to watch online porn. Sites that don't do so will face a hefty fine and a UK ban.

Age verification will come in two ways: providing credit card details or buying a special ID card provided by AgeID.

The government says the change has been introduced to protect under-18s.

Do you think this is a good idea or is this an invasive means of harvesting private data on adults?

How are they going to police that?

It will be up to porn sites, it seems. They have to check age on visitors who come from the UK or else they will face penalties. Those that don't will presumably risk being caught up by the existing bodies which monitor the internet, which obviously use bots and other things to sweep around looking for this stuff.

Of course, if you know what a VPN is and how to use it, then getting around the age check is fairly trivial. Which does rather raise the question of what the point of it is if not to harvest data on people.

Exactly!
Is starting on April 1st significant?
You can watch porn on the internet?
IT's clearly a mix of data harvesting and a tax.

There is no way it will do what they say it will do. Let's face it part of the problem is tech savvy kids and non tech savvy parents.

These codes will be available from sites within hours I suspect.
1984 - we are well and truly there. Only our thoughts to be monitored - no doubt that will happen too at some point.
I`m sure this will cover the dark web as well..............
Precisely CaC.

If they struggle to stop sites promoting terrorism how on earth are they going to Police this?

And I thought Plod was short of brass?
The wife puts a parental block on porn sites.

...so that I can't access them :o/
Hasn't block porn been available for ages? I doubt 1st of April will be the start of this.
it's not a bad idea in itself but utterly futile. Most of the sites are based abroad anyway and we have no such power to compel them to check ID.
I don't think this will work, even if it is true. As mentioned by others, tech savvy kids will soon be able to get round it. Within minutes probably.
TTT under GDPR any world wide website operating in the UK is legally obliged to ask you to accept cookies or what not, i assume they'll jsut do this for age on porn sites in the UK

If you go to an american website it will make you "accept" some sites wont even work because they cba with the GDPR risks.

They'll certainly be able to block access to a site by UK visitors if they don't comply. But even if they do, that is extremely easy to get around.

The trouble is, there are plenty of people who don't know how to do this and will either buy an access card (which you need to use with an app apparently to watch porn) or use their credit card.

All in the name of "protecting the children." Zheesh.
I'm sure magazines will still be available, so don't go too nutz ;O)
The problem isnt really the porn Spath, it's the tax and data harvesting behind it.

What is next? A licence to use the internet?
is the internet a privilege?
Inconveniencing many to cover the inability of parents to control their kids. Ridiculous tactic. One must assume it's an April Fool.
I don't think it's an april fools because they tried to ban porn recently
