A petition has been launched to offer Ireland membership of the UK after Brexit as a way of solving the impasse over the border. It currently has 2,000 signatures, up from 700 yesterday.

This comes a few week after John Humphrys, a host of the Today programme, made the same suggestion in an interview with Ireland's Europe Minister on Radio 4:

I'm happy to offer Ireland membership of the UK but I doubt past historical differences would make them accept. I would encourage them to leave the EUSSR though.

Not April 1st yet. Given what’s due to happen 3 days before that, they should have saved it for then.
Meanwhile the petition from within Ireland to join the UK doubled its signatories yesterday when Sean O’Chance put pen to paper ...

Why would they want to join the UK?

Even IF they left the EU we would likely have a free and comprehensive free trade deal with them. There would be no need to join th UK.

Why would anyone offer Ireland to join the UK when Ireland north & south
have wanted their freedom from UK (or British Rule) for centuries.
The mind boggles, everyone wants peace not war.

The text of the “petition” ought to be an embarrassment. The “republic of Ireland” strictly did not exist until 1949.
Still it’ll give the erstwhile members of “the family” a good laugh after the rugby.

jno, sorry to rain on your parade but you are aware they are not JRM's funds neither does he have any say in investment decisions.

In addition this is pretty normal practice, if you have a private pension you might like to be careful what you say since you dont seem too savvy on where money goes and how investment works.

Whilst they are unlikely to accept, they might consider the act would kill two birds with one stone. a) Solve the problem of their leader saying he wants an open border yet doing his utmost to create a closed one. And b) getting out from a sinking federal private empire early.

Any animosity from the Irish to the UK should now be in the past. I know they like harping on about ancient history on that island, but modern day generations must surely be above that nonsense now, leaving only a portion of older citizens unable to leave the past where it should be. It just need the percentage of murderous terrorists to decent citizens to have reduced sufficiently to prevent violence getting a hold again.

Well that petition's made me laugh, K......We left after 121 years of being part of the family? Some bloody family it was! Has whoever wrote that an inkling of Irish history and the cruel part Britain played in it?

Britain and Ireland stronger together? Poppycock......we're doing fine in Europe....that Britain isn't is mostly Britain's fault so why in the name of God would we want to join Britain and its mess.

And as for Sunny-Dave, jno.......he knows what he wants and the life he wants to live but if he ever had a brain blip and signed this he'd be sleeping in the shed with his cases packed...and with no Ibuprofen... :-)

If this got enough signatures it would presumably have to be debated in parliament.

The petition map is interesting.....four numpties from Kettering have signed.....mind you (just had a thought) if folk outside the republic really think about it they'll all sign....I mean....who wouldn't want us in union with them....the craic......the Guinness.....the music......the charm......the red heads......and of course we have no litter problem.....bliss....x
