Not withstanding the newer firms doing cheap "funerals" for just over a grand, surely the local authorities own the crematoria anyway, I don;t see why this is such an expense. Once body cleared for disposal, in the oven, sorted. Anyone with more direct knowledge shed any light?

Our crem in Exeter is private too and is known for being one of the most expensive in the country.
Naomi, I am trying to say that if the council own the crematorium they lose the price that would be paid by the funeral director. If the crematorium was privately owned the council would have to pay for its use.
Sorry, danny, I don’t understand your argument about funeral directors. Regardless of venue, they have to be paid by whoever organises the funeral.

As for venue, it stands to reason that it’s cheaper for the council to organise a funeral at a council owned crematorium than at one that is privately owned.
Naomi, the point I am trying to make is that a pauper's funeral causes a loss of money to the council when the use a crematorium.
Of course it does.
I congratulate Danny who is able to distinguish 'cost' in an account from money ( or moolah ) changing hands

these figures arent normalised are they - per person or part of per person (*) disposed of ? Brum lots of dead bodies - Little Snodshire one.

Little Snodshire who spent tuppence on a funeral isnt more careful wiv money if they bury one person and Birmingham 400.

the other thing in an internal budget you can make it cost what you want.
the only thing you cant forge is a cash flow account
( hence money paid to a funeral director is proper stuff)
want it cheap as a figure - only charge for gas used
want it expensive - include fixed costs, cost of a few clerks, rates, putative hire cost of a facility you own - anything

well done danny for intuitively sensing that

yeah I know a hundred ABers will say: wot dat? gooobledegook dat.
I dont get the high cost of funerals for anyone.

My preference is to be donated to a Uni but seems they are pretty picky now (Shame since the idea of my skeleton being carted round the pubs on rag week rather appealed). So for me the next best thing is cheap quick disposal. Bin bag is fine, stick me in the oven and pile the ashes into the wheelie bin. Sorted.
They cost a fortune. I don't know what happens when the body is removed, all I know is when my father died, he had an open casket, and they made him look healthy. That skill needs to be paid for.
"That skill needs to be paid for"

Yes, if you want it. I dont. My empty corpse will be useless and just needs to be disposed of quickly to prevent any disease. Rather looks like my relatives will be paying for others' fancy ones then.
I'm of the same thought, Young, but we were following my dads wishes. Catholics!!!
If somebody wants to pay then I have no objection, they (or a familly member) will have earned it so they can do what they like within the law.

It is just there seems no option for low cost getting shot of ones carcass. Shouldn't be more than £200 tops if you ask me.
TTT - I find it depressing that apparently you do not have an iota of compassion for those less fortunate than yourself.

diddly what are you on about?. This is a discussion about funerals, where have I not been comapassionate about people less fortunate than myself?
Could you tell me please, who were you referring to as...

Necroparasites

and

Necro leeches
Personally I don't resent £1 per annum from my rates being spent on this necessary service. Much more is wasted elsewhere.
councils have plenty of vans and body bags are cheaper than boxes id assume, from hospital to crem how much, what about funeral pyres with wood waste ie old furniture on some disused industrial est.
what about liquid nitrogen that can turn biological into dust...mmm
that a good idea for recreation in a prison, a prison pool.
Lynne, I think he was referring to funeral directors.
Dannyk, for me there is the same problem of inefficiency whether with central or local government - same principles govern.
TTT - you seem to be implying that councils shouldn't pay for the funerals of people who die with no known relatives or without anyone with the means to pay for a funeral. I'll willingly pay my Council Tax to enable local authorities to do that.
