Although not on the same scale as the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 and the Krakatoa eruption of 1883, this is awful and I can see more fatalities to come. So far 168 confirmed dead and many missing :((

Just watched this on the news. Awful, those poor people.
Dreadful news, my heart goes out to all those affected.
Anybody worked out the CFC contribution this latest eruption has contributed to the destruction of the planet?
I thought some boffins had worked out that volcanic eruptions decelerated global warming?
Well, there you go. Volcanos create CFCs, green-house gases produce global warming, but volcanos reduce it.

Got it, guys?

After the eruption of 1883 temperatures fell by 1 deg.
vetuste_ennemi - have you no charity in your heart? 168 dead up until now and many, many more missing and all you want is an argument about CFCs. Need to bow out of this post before I say something I will regret.
Well Volcanoes erupting can't be helped in terms of CFC's either way so let's just worry about helping the people directly affected by this shall we? It's truly dreadful for the people involved :( x
//have you no charity in your heart?//

Not really, Maggie. Wish I had more.

But I'm sure your surplus more than compensates for my deficit.
really big eruptions can affect the whole world. The Year Without a Summer, 1816, was caused by Tambora in Indonesia sending ash cloud over Europe and keeping temperatures down. Another one in 1783 sent a cloud of sulphur dioxide that killed more than 20,000 people in Britain.

Factually incorrect.

You've been taken in by proven climate-change liar Christopher Monckton

Mediabias: These sources consist of legitimate science or are evidence based through the use of credible scientific sourcing.

He has no training in science and just asserts things that suit his agenda, with zero evidence.

Studies (referenced above) show that while CFCs are present in volcanic gas emissions, the levels are no higher than the atmospheric background, so there is no additional emission by volcanic activity.

And as soon as you think about it, there is no way that CFCs could be produced by natural processes, since they are produced only in chemical plants.

Monckton saw some scientific papers showing that volcanic emissions of HCl (hydrogen chloride, which becomes hydrochloric acid when dissolved in water) and misinterpreted the HCl formula as a CFC.

Just plain wrong.

Misinformation.

Demonstrating real lack of understanding of the issues

Deliberately seeking to devalue factual discussion

Like much of the crap discussed by ill-informed, gullible, politically-motivated contributors to these threads.

Worse, spreading these lies rather than offering sympathy for the dead and injured.

And Merry Christmas to all of you.
Thanks, IJKLM. Got that, Vestry?
Nature at its cruellest, those poor souls.
