Compassion for animals, unless the animal is a human. What a weird creed.

Not the way to win friends and influence people, is it?
Ok. I'll be the token vegan and tell you why I disagree with the actions of my fellow 'creed', what ever that is supposed to be/mean.

The people who did this are idiots and for one of two reasons...

A) It's rude to deface peoples property.
B) Slowly slowly catchy monkey ;) Lets see how many of those that signed up to this glorified attempt to make the slaughter of animals more family friendly have to back down when little [insert default childs name here] refuses to eat Tilly the Turkey....

Or Peppa Pig....
I was thinking the exact same thing.
My mum was telling me of a time when she was little, when my grandad killed and cooked the rabbit that my mum thought was a pet. She couldn't eat it.
Option B - people won't turn to veganism because they signed up to that
I already gave an option B 237SJ and take your point on board.

That said. I'm 49 and have been literally brainwashed into eating meat and drinking milk for most of my life. The generations that are following me are learning that there has to be an way of life to the one we live now if our planet is to survive. Personally I think it's too late. We are killing our seas blah blah blah... but meh I'm to here to preach, just be the token vegan lol

*another way
//there has to be an way of life to the one we live now if our planet is to survive.//

our planet is not at risk. when we eventually go, the planet will set about righting the damage. it might take a few million years but that is as nothing when compared to geological time.

it's our lifestyle that's at risk, and as you say it's probably too late. we could switch to a plant-based diet, however only animal manure can sustain the land's fertility long-term- plant based fertilizers are rubbish, and mined potash isn't sustainable. we're doomed, actually.
I'm one of those people who believes that, as omnivores, we are meant to eat meat. But I also know that how and what we eat may have to change. We need to be able to provide food in a sustainable way...making the most of, and enriching the soil we live from.
I'd advise anyone to read this article by Isabella Tree...author and farmer, who, with her husband, has worked to bring nature back to their farm. I admit to not knowing a lot about farming, but this was encouraging to me. She's also written a book about it...

My neighbour has had three lambs in her orchard since late April. They were orphan lambs too old when orphaned to put on other sheep so I was told. She was bottle feeding them for ages and they have grown huge. Now they are gone, I naively asked if they had gone back into the herd or whatever, she said 'no they've gone in the freezer'. Thats just horrible, how can you eat something that you have bottle fed for months? It has made me think about what I eat, I would like to be vegetarian but am too lazy. Its too easy to think of meat as something other than dead flesh. I reckon in 100 years most people will be vegan or at least veggie.
I really think it depends on how you *feel* on a particular diet. We have to eat what makes us as individuals feel well and healthy.
No argument from me there Mushroom... I doubt the human race will last another 100 years at this rate but there's no harm in trying ;)
Farmers don't get attached to their animals and give them names for obvious reasons. When I read that article, I did find the fact that people could name their turkey a little distasteful. I wonder how many takers they had?
Veganism suddenly seems to be the new buzz fad, which means that the media are jumping all over it right now.

There are differing attitudes to animals, as the 'bloodsport' debates on here always polarise -

Townies who are soft on most animals, and think farmers and country folk who are hunters are cruel.

Farmers and country folk who regard animals with an absence of sentimentality as things to work, provide income, or pests.

Vegans who prefer not to eat or use animal products as a moral choice.

Of course, any of those attitudes develop extremists, and because veganism is the current hot trend for the media, extremist vegans are going to hoover up a lot of air-time and column inches.

Just take no notice, the next trend will be along in a minute.
'

There is nothing in an 'omni' diet that can not be be replicated with a vegan diet. The main difference in the two being that one is less harmful.
Animal fat and cholesterol is not healthy for humans... most of whom are lactose intolerant.
Plant protein is easily available... and cruelty free. I really don't get what the problem is other than people having to satisfy their taste buds, or am I wrong?
A passing fad?

Ok. Or a natural progression from killing our environment... our wildlife?

Ok, lets keep razing the rainforests to feed your tastebuds....

Or shall we learn from the past and try to be a little more compassionate to our planet and those we share it with?
To be honest, we need to look a plastics with regards to damaging the environment...
Divegirl, I've been researching vegan diets with regard to anti inflammatory foods as I have a health problem. Two things bother me: why if eating dead flesh is so abhorrent to a vegan do they eat meat substitutes? Secondly a 'baked mushroom sprinkled with yeast flakes' is not a substitute for a baked salmon fillet either with regard to taste or nutrition.
The simple answer id this AL...

I love meat! However, morally, ethically and for my own health and peace of mind I choose not to eat it :)

I don't really eat a lot of fake meats, though Linda Mac country pies do hit the spot [as do her sausage rolls lol].
Being Vegan is not about hating meat... it's about hating the process of putting it on the plate. No matter how 'humane' people think slaughter is, no being wants to die.
And as for yeast flakes???? Oh my! You learn to love them!
Also, without meaning to pry... are your health problems arthritis related? I may be able to point you in the direction of some good information if so :)
divegirl, yeh I get it , that's a great explanation. :-)
