How can equal pay be agreed if the men and women are doing different jobs? Surely it's only cut and dried if they are doing the same job. Otherwise it's just a grey area.

The want and deserve pay for similar work undertaken - why should they be paid upto £3 an hour less because they are women?
Not if you use the same job grading scheme for both.
Agreed. There's a good reason why dustbin men earn more than dinner-ladies (who sit around drinking tea till they're sick of it)
'They' want to turn everyone into units with a number.
Job Grading Scheme? There you go.
One way round it- men do dustbins for 2.5 days while women do dinner duties, then they swap over for the rest of the weekand dinner duties. I can see the argument though that the women could apply for dustbin jobs but generally don't.
don't know where the superfluous "and dinner duties" came from
its possible to analyse jobs in terms of stuff like physical effort, responsibility, working environment (hot cold exposure to weather) and so on. Then you can see whether jobs are equivalent and should be paid the same or not. I did some of this stuff in the NHS, its not complex and it works
Women fight for equality of jobs, and pay, but that goes on all levels not just the top. If 5 women need to be in a board of directors for every 5 men, then why not the same for binmen? People only want equality when they think it will benefit them.

Then what about insurance? Surely it's sexist for female drivers to pay less for insurance? Even though statistics prove they're better younger drivers?

Anthropology has led us to where we are. Stereotypes are spawned from anthropology so in reality, it's just people emotions going up in arms. Yes one woman may be better for a specific job position that one man but at the end of the day to say the man has a bigger salery because he is a man is assumption. It's not a fact is it?

Massive palava in my opinion. I believe in equity but i don't believe in having a paddy and making someone seem sexist to bully your way into a job position. Times are changing and people are getting upset and acting like they're not.
How many times in a DIY store have you requested the help with something heavy and the female assistance has said "please wait while I contact a male member of the staff"?
@AOG - Never
AOG Men are physiologically stronger than women so a heavy item is more likely to be dealt with more safely by someone who can manage that load easily. That has no reflection on the fact that the two colleagues should not get equal pay.
Either you have never purchased heavy items or your real name is Pansy Potter.
"That has no reflection on the fact that the two colleagues should not get equal pay."

I think two people in the exact same job position except one person does all of the lifting should get paid more for physical endurance through out the day, also the affects that will have on their physical health in the long run. One example where an increased pay is more than deserved. If their were machines to do the lifting then fair.. that'd be equal but their isn't.

Do we want equality, or equity? You're explaining equity.
spath, gender advantage in insurance where its based SOLELY on gender is not now allowed. It is allowed where stats show that one gender has less acidents or makes less claims than another.
Yes, AOG, leave all the back-breaking work to the men. After all, they can do it easily lol.

Yes in some cases where the job is analysed in terms such as I described, it is a fact that men are paid more than women.
Is it a fact that men are intentionally paid more than Women? No.
"it is a fact that men are paid more than women."

What i'm saying is.. it's not a fact to say this is 'because' they are a man.
I have just read the article....This has been going on for 10 YEARS!!!!! no wonder they are striking
Spath, I know you are a gardener but better to stop digging now I think
