No they should pay out of their own pockets.
No
To my mind, the fund was set up to find Maddie. The fact that the McCann's made a comment about one of the detectives, which may cost them money, is nothing to do with finding her and so the McCanns should pay any damages out of their own pocket.
Because it is a 'not for profit' company and not a registered charity (it can't be) there is no regulations in place to stop them spending the money however they like
I heard they used the fund to pay off their mortgage. Is there any truth to that?
I'm sure those who donated to the fund never considered that their cash would be misdirected in this way.

Maybe priorities change when you're at the sharp end though but no, the money should be kept aside and used as originally intended and not to fund adventures at law.
No. The fund wasn't raised to pay for alleged slander/libel court costs.
No wish to pile more misery on them, but they are responsible for their actions.
Mind you, every cloud has a silver lining, if spent on that maybe it'll keep them out of the newspapers at long last.

Never understood why they have even managed to obtain the privilege of both a huge police fund as well as a public fund?
If a top guy says the parents are covering up the death then why argue it
Maybe because they believe they didnt Spath?

Either way I dont think this fund should be used.
no... enough is enough...
"If a top guy says the parents are covering up the death then why argue it"

Are you blindly accepting the Portuguese ex-detective is correct and that the McCann's covered up their daughter's death? Really?

If you apply even a tiny bit of common sense even you will be able to draw the conclusion that the ex-detectives comments don't stand-up to much scrutiny.

There was a moron on this site sometime ago (I can't be bothered to remember its name) who seriously suggested they drugged her but administered too much and killed her. Idiocy doesn't even begin to cover a comment like that. If it genuinely believed its comment, then I'd love them to explain what the McCanns did with the body that has managed to baffle the police.

Anyway, to the question - Yes, if the McCann's are required to have to pay costs, and there's nothing to stop them using the fund, then I think the sum should be paid for from the fund. They have a right to challenge the despicable comments, and for a couple who have experienced every parents worse nightmare, to have these allegations levelled at them is rubbing salt into an already open wound, so saying they should fund it themselves is a pretty sh11ty thing to want.
No. They should pay for it out of their own money
No
The fund should be used for what it was set up for - to find the 'child' - that was why people made donations .

If the McCann's want to bring a court case against A N Other , for whatever reason ; then they should be prepared, from the outset to find the means from elsewhere , by which to cover costs , should they lose the case
No, if they have to pay then it should come from their own pocket, not from a fund raised to find a missing child.
While I can see the reason why the parents of a missing child would do what ever they can to find out what happened to her/him I just don't see why this particular case justifies the amount of time and money spent on it and I'm certain the families of young children who have gone missing in strange circumstances agree.
I completely agree with Desk Diary.

That Pondlife that is Goncalo Amaral has hindered the search for Madeleine by convincing the less intelligent that Madeleine died the night she went missing. If, God forbid, they lose in court to that vermin, they should be able to cover the costs from the fund. It's all part and parcel of getting justice for Madeleine.
^ Ditto.
"Maybe because they believe they didnt Spath? "

The parents believe that they are not covering up her death? How convenient for them.

Nothing adds up in this case. All eyes are on the parents, but god forbid we go down that line of enquiry, it might affect their book.
One of the parents will eventually crack, probably the mother, and when they do all their assets, including the 'Fund' should be liquidised and given to a charity set up in Madeleines name for abused children.

To answer the question: No
Yes. I contributed to the fund and did not put any constraints on how it should be used. They MUST fight this case by the truly awful Amaral if there is to be justice.

Oh and No they did not clear their mortgage from the funds raised, they paid I believe only two months when they first returned to England after M's disappearance.

And if there are any new clues about disappeared children the police will investigate just like they did with Ben Needham. To suggest otherwise is an insult to the police.
