Yes these successful students deserve their congratulations, but is all the TV and other media coverage of scenes of jubilation amongst the successful students necessary?

What about those who have not been so successful, how must they feel? Must be bad enough opening the envelope that they have waited in anticipation for weeks, but then to see that they have failed?

Yes it's utterly ridiculous.

when I took my 'O' Levels and 'A' levels the results were posted to me. I shared the results with my parents and a few friends and family and that was it. None of us was on the telly whooping, screaming (or sobbing, as appropriate).
Same as New Judge for me. I guess it gets so much coverage in attempt to prove that the young liberal thinkers who have messed around with our exam system for years were right all along and standards are soooo much higher....
I agree, if you didn't do well it must be an awful epxerience with all this attention.
My goodness, some people will attack this fine country of ours over anything. Note to mention an undercurrent of jealousy because they weren't similarly feted. And as for the faux sympathy for the less fortunate, such hypocrisy from those who usually freely abuse the supporters of such folk as loony lefties - it beggars belief.
yep getting silly, it was never on the roger when I was a saucepan.
At our old school they managed to lose the exam papers in the post. Wouldn’t have happened in my day ...
Yes - I agree about GCSEs - but the Daily Telegraph will never stop reporting 'A' levels with the mandatory pictures of fruity posh girls jumping for joy ...
Does the Sun still do ‘Sandra may not be heading to college but she’s proud of her D grade cups’ (next to a story about a pervert teacher in trouble for eloping with one of his pupils ;-) )
It is over coverage. Mine got theirs through the post.

I collected mine in person but that was before the TV cameras were there.
Agree to an extent - Scottish results were out weeks ago and didn't get much coverage. Hey ho, when I got mine in nineteen oatcake they were posted out and only my parents and a few friends were told.
The leaving cert results were out here (RoI) the day before, they were still going on about it until this week when we have 24/7 Pope chat, it I think it makes young people preparing now for the leaving cert or GCSE's in UK feel that it is the be all and end all of their lives.
"Note to mention an undercurrent of jealousy because they weren't similarly feted."

No jealousy on my part, Canary. In fact, I could think of little worse than being on the telly revealing my exam results to the world. These are private matters which should not be bandied about as cheap news items on the TV.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the results are lauded to show what a wonderful job the State education system is doing with our young people. In fact it should be reporting what an utter mess it is.
Probably more truth in that than many think NJ.

State propaganda is rife at the moment.
I believe that is what I said NJ
Yes Prudie, so you did!
Yeah, the annual exam results thread where all the old farts condemn the young people enjoying life. Brilliant. What a time to be alive.
I'm not sure why it's even on the news. GCSE results came out. It happens every year at the same time. Big deal.
I took GCSE's when they were first introduced, when the teachers were constantly striking and away training as to what was expected for the the new 'GCSE' regime, they still didn't seem to have a clue... nothing changes in government circles.

Technically I passed nine, but in reality passed only Maths, English, Physics and Biology.

Sorry for side stepping as for the coverage its the world that we live in now.
It's slow news time. (apart from Trump's impending impeachment proceedings, perhaps)
"Yeah, the annual exam results thread where all the old farts condemn the young people enjoying life. Brilliant. What a time to be alive."

Nobody on here (in this thread at least) is condemning "young people enjoying life". The thread is about the ridiculous level of coverage the exam results receive.
