//Two members of a terror cell can face US justice after the UK dropped its requirement for assurances they would not be executed if found guilty, according to a report….. A letter sent by home secretary Sajid Javid to US attorney general Jeff Sessions says the UK would demand no "assurances" that the pair will not be executed, contrary to previous policy…..The home secretary's letter reveals his fears that British laws may not be enough for a successful prosecution and that US terrorism laws will be more effective.//

Getting tough on terrorists is good news – but an acknowledgement that British laws may not be enough for a successful prosecution says a lot. Time for a change in the law then?

Yes we should change our laws - why should we interfere in other countries criminal pursuits as long as proper evidence exists.
.// A letter sent by home secretary Sajid Javid to US attorney general Jeff Sessions says the UK would demand no "assurances" that the pair will not be executed//

Well that’s confusing.
Question Author
Why is it confusing? It's straightforward enough.
Maybe he will come back and say he'd said "wouldn't" not "would". Nah- no-one would do that.
But what is confusing about it, minkyme?
The death penalty is one thing that I very much agree with Sharia law on- if they want Britain to adopt Sharia law, I, for one, would be very happy to accommodate re-introducing the death penalty for acts of Islamist terrorism here in the UK. This would also include acts of terrorism including plotting the death of others, such as the evil Islamists who have been recently convicted of plotting to kill Prince George and some of our politicians.

I think we should get behind the muslim groups campaigning for the adoption of Sharia law and grant them their request in respect of the death penalty and the removal of limbs of criminals- it would make our streets a safer place- come on Sadiq, you've not been shy about sharing many a platform with radical Islamists in the past- now's your chance to really reduce crime in the "Capital" (pun intended!).
//The Daily Telegraph cited documents showing that the UK government has abandoned its opposition to the death penalty so they can be sent to the US.//

We’re soft when we need to be tough and tough when we need to be soft, what is this? Topsy turvy land?

So we’re going to send them to their deaths? In other words martyrdom which is exactly what they want as they cant commit suicide so will get their 72 virgins and this will encourage other terrorists that //this is the way out//. Do you not see where I’m going with this?

Dumbest idea ever.

With Islamic terrorists the BEST thing we can do is impose a WHOLE LIFE SENTENCE for reasons I’ve set above.
I'm torn, is it irony or a complete misunderstanding of the world^^
We in the UK can't impose any sentence as we are not going to charge them, minkyme
Question Author
Minkyme, //In other words martyrdom which is exactly what they want//

Why should we care what they want? They're actions render them heroes anyway in the eyes of their fans. Their desires should have no influence whatsoever upon our treatment of them. Get rid - permanently. The fewer the better.
We should do all in our power to save the remaining members of "the beatles" from the prospect of the death penalty.
Jahadi John and his comrades were murderous butchers. If they were sent to the USA to stand trial, and maybe face the death penalty if convicted, it would shame us.
//Get rid - permanently. The fewer the better.//

We should be doing that with non Muslim convicts and the opposite with Islamic terrorists.
Sandy, It wouldn't shame me at all.
Question Author
Minkyme, If you mean should some non-Muslim criminals be executed, yes. These people are not facing execution because they're Muslim.... they're facing execution for the crimes they've committed.
Question Author
danny, I think sandy is on a wind-up.
Yes, definitely high time there were changes to our laws.

As an aside, are terrorists really that concerned about the death penalty? Isn't it just a form of martyrdom to them?
It's irrelevant what the terrorists thing, they will either be live hero's or dead Martyrs so we cant win on that one.

However removing them from the earth ensures no liberal minded individual(s) let them out in the future to commit further atrocities.

Just a pity we cant get the rope out for a few others.

//Facepalm//

You obviously haven’t been reading this thread otherwise you would have read my post at 8:29, groan

//double facepalm//
Well, I'm not a fan of state-sanctioned murder, YMB, but your point about preventing them from being free to unleash their murderous jihad is a very relevant one.

However, I would still prefer life without parole, access to the Quran, special dietary privileges or any visitation from loved ones. A lifetime of hard labour would be ideal.
Question Author
Minkyme, who are you talking to - and what does facepalm mean?
Dropping that requirement makes for a messy precedent. We don't send folk to primitive countries who still have a death penalty for moral reasons. To make an exception because one's own laws are thought inadequate is damning. Now we will get every other primitive country saying, you sent those to America, we demand that you are consistent and send our criminals back to us to be killed too. And bang goes our moral stance, we fall to the level of others instead. We need to look at our law and decide if it is right or not.
