600 million people, was this inevitable considering it's over population, and bad management
imagine a mass exodus, and then think of all the migrants wanting to leave africa right now.

Fairly inevitable, everything is India is managed in a chaotic way, and I'm imagining water management can only be another thing managed the same. Poor people.
They sit under the himalayas, they have monsoon levels of rain, they are wetter than Wales. I don't see what more natural advantages would be enough.

Dreadful, but cherchez le profits, as usual.

Indian is currently run by a guy called Modi, a hindu fascist, whose power base is either amongst the thuggish right-wingers or the (very) monied 'aristocracy'. The provision of water (and of comprehensive sewerage systems for that matter) is not a priority.
It's like this in many countries over the world , from africa to the South Americas to Asia .

The Governments and and those with power and influence live in luxury , while the ordinary folk are left to in poverty to their own devices .

Well why don't the ordinary folk do some thing about it ?
Trouble is , if / when they do try , any rebellion against the system is usually crushed .

Very sad that humans can do this to their own .

oh? Modi's government declared in 2014 that they intended to end open defecation in India by Gandhi's 150th birthday, in 2019. they allotted $40bn for building and education. yet 4 years later more than 500m Indians still do it, while the latrines provided are used instead as storage sheds.

they've got a kin space program SFF!
They do TTT but they also have a very wide spectrum of population from very clever down to very poor and some very 'not so bright' who simply do not want to change.

On the subject of latrines I remember a time at work the bog seats kept being broken. Most put it down to an extremely large boned gentleman (and indeed once apparently it was him by confession) but as it turned out most times it was some of the Indian contingent standing on them to poo. Also explained the disgusting state they got into as well. The Ladies also complained their bogs were filthy too - similar problem plus additional issues with 'ladies sanitary'.

Basically you can bring the horse to water but you cant make it drink.

To solve the water problem India needs to flood some valleys (they already have some). Problem does occur, particularity in the North when the Monsoon fails.
It's not just 'third world' countries where there's a serious risk of running out of water.

Take a look at the UN-endorsed projections shown here:

spathiphyllum
// TTT, how often do you collect your rain water and feed it to your children? Would you also use this water to wash, cook, clean?//

I lived without 'running water'. Collected rainwater in a butt from the roof of the pigsty.
And yes, we used it to wash, cook and clean.
Amazingly we used to survive between meals without drinking gallons of water (or coffee, or pop).
Isn't rainwater clean?

All countries surely collect rainwater to use. A country has only itself to blame if it fails to collect and purify and use it. It's sad if the masses suffer due to lack of early action by their authorities. The area needs to run itself according to it's resources. As the article states it will only get worse in the years ahead, this is not a one off disaster that can be solved by aid. It's a failure to manage the country properly, and they need to sort that out.
Question Author
youngmafbog, standing on bogs, reminds of a visit to turkey once, i was given a hotel room, the toilet or a hole in the floor with a tap on the wall, i asked where the shower head was...never occurred to me it was for defacating, they gave me a room with a proper bog in it, a thought came to mind...what if i had could not crouch because of some illness...
Dear India and the rest

Start by using contraception and move on from there. You have no right to swamp the planet.
They need infrastructure to better use the abundant water they have. Cancel the space program and spend it on that. Create some reservoirs and culverts etc.
