they do sort of shrug their shoulders and say - well these things happen in the land of the free....

can you imagine after Manchester and 22 kids dead
someone saying
O god the muslims again - they kinda do this alot - let off bombs oh and it isnt only christians - we tend to allow them to get on with it .....
It's insane and I see no way out.
Why did ITV wait until their six o'clock news was half way through before they decided inform us of this terrible shooting? Oh yes, we had to watch a load of attention seeking Royal watchers acting up for the TV cameras!

Also, I wonder what unpopular news the government is pushing out today - this is a good day to do it!
according to the NRA, and the Donald, the only answer to a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. thus these events will continue to happen while US authorities insist on schools being "no firearms" areas.
Hi Wiltsman - yeah I noticed the juxta position
didja notice they said Cliveden was in the cotwolds ?
chilterns more like - Marlow Bucks I think

and Mushie - I think Texas allows arms in the skools - dont they have/allow voluntary armed squads in schools?

which was the thing that Pres trump advocated

( shoot the teachers first I thought would be the rule)
Sapthipyhllum You obviously have no idea just how much the 'right to bear arms ' under the 2nd amendment means to the USA. No sane politician would even think of trying to control guns. It is political suicide. Churches even hold services were the congregation can take their guns to be 'blessed' by the priest! A gun owner would far rather have their arms cut off than give up a gun.
The shootings will go on and on as long as the USA allows any citizen to hold as many guns and as much ammunition as they want without any type of restriction at all.
Why not make the punishment so severe, so grotesque, so humiliating that it may/might deter copycat looney moronic idiots. Just saying...
It's out of control and will keep happening, no one seems to have the will to change it.

So dreadful.
Sticking to US amendments must be so comforting to the bereaved families, mmm?
Garaman - // How sad, and how shocking that they continue to allow it to happen? //

I'm not sure who you mean by 'they' - I assume the government, or how they 'continue to allow it to happen'.

The situation with guns in America is unsolvable, because in order to take any meaningful action in terms of gun control, any politician has to commit political suicide by merely mentioning the subject.

President Obama mentioned the idea of gun control in his second and last presidential term - no harm could come this political career, but he was careful not to go too overboard, lest his position be allied to the Democrats, and damage their election chances.

President Trump is allied to the NRA and it's bizarre notion that there are people out there who are absolutely OK to have guns, therefore everyone has to have guns so the 'OK' people can have their, and vote Republican.

I honestly cannot see a solution for generations to come, while the 'frontier' mentality that is so deeply engrained in the American psyche is pandered to by politicians who put votes before lives.

Sadly, punishment is not the answer. You can destroy a vicious dog when it has bitten a child, but that doesn't take the bite away.

Prevention is the answer, and that means education - that guns are really not the wonderful idea that the NRA says they are, and that needs a President and a Congress who believe that gun culture has to change.

Sadly, in order to be within a country mile of being able to influence gun culture and gun laws, you already have to have proved beyond doubt that you agree with the gun laws and the gun culture as they are. Anything else means you won't get to County Hall, never mind Washington.
I despair that this kind of thing is beyond salvation. Gun laws are a factor but that wont stop it happening, something is horribly wrong in the psyche of people who do this and I'm sure there is far more to blame including violence in films and breakdown of the family as just a couple of examples.

I mean the majority of Americans, Andy. If the majority wanted to do something about it, it would no longer be 'political suicide' to take action.
I think EDDIE's got the answer at 19:20.
// A gun owner would far rather have their arms cut off than give up a gun. //
You offer all gun owners the choice; those that keep their guns will have no arms, so won't be able to fire them. Simple.
I'm going to disagree with that...sounds a tad bonkers.
As to the 'Gun Lobby' in the USA. I am on the US site Quora as well as AB. I am constantly trying to put forward an argument for gun control. But It is like banging your head against a wall.
I get asked questions like ''How can you defend yourself against a home invasion without firearms ? '' , ''How can you feel safe walking the streets without a gun?'' , ''How often have you been threatened with a gun?''
I really think that a US politician who advocated banning guns would get about the same level of support as a British politician who advocated making child sexual abuse legal.
I'd let them have their guns and ban the sale of bullets....
bhg481. US police forces have been asked '' If there was a ban on guns would you be willing to enforce it ?'' . At least 50% said 'NO'.
So what would the chance be that they would go round chopping off the hands of those who wanted to keep their guns? Yes, I know it is a daft question, but I am trying to convey the attitude of the average US gun owner to any possible hint of control.
Could Talbot and EDDIE please switch on their chuckle muscles?
