/// Superintendent Glyn Fernquest said: 'I'd like to just reassure the public that this incident is not believed to be terror related and has no links to the Newport marathon that is taking place this morning. ///

What could it possibly be, a hate crime or a racist incident or just yet another nutter?

Beacuase it isn’t terror related?
Do you mean it was still ‘terrifying’ for those involved?
Because. Tut.
Fairly obviously because this sort of incident, given recent events, might be taken by many people to be terrorism related, which, awful though any such similar incident may be, is likely to cause unnecessary alarm.
To quell what is often the first thought for many.

What a dreadful and yes, terrifying scene.

Well yes that is a point, but as yet the police have nothing more to go on but the fact that the driver was a black man, he could still be a terrorist.
I would imagine they DO have something else to go on
Initially I thought perhaps a ghastly accident, but it certainly doesn't look like an accident. I'm surprised that large crowd didn't pounce upon him and hold him down until police arrived.

Terrorist attack or not, any incident like this will cause 'necessary' alarm, don't you think?
Ich has answered your question as well as it’s going to be answered in the 3rd post.

Do you ever try answering your own questions before you ask them, AOG? Might save you a bit of embarrassment in future.
In the current climate alarm is to be unexpected - and not unreasonable.
*expected* - not unexpected. Flipping predictive text!
i think you aswered yourself in your own quote - "I'd like to just reassure the public "
it's to reassure the public

I am not at all embarrassed, I asked a perfectly reasonable question and as yet no one as come up with the answer.

Until the perpetrator is caught and questions his reason for his crime will not be know by you, any other ABers or more important the police.

That is unless the police are withholding information that the driver left a note for them stating that this wasn't a terrorist attack gov.

At that time in the morning it's just as likely to be drink related.
i came up with the answer
Of course it may have been a deliberate act to hurt as many people as possible. However, having read the full article, it may be that the first instance was an accident but, in his haste to get away, he hit others. Then, when some of the crowd approached the car, maybe the driver totally panicked which caused even more collisions.
AOG

It’s to reassure the public.

That’s why.

Quite quickly after an event like this, the public will want to know whether the attack was terror-related. It’s the second question (after “How many casualties?”).

It makes sense for the authorities to have that answer ready.

Oh please forgive me, I didn't realise that your Terrorist worked on a 9 till 5 basis.
I said just as likely.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, perhaps it's because the likes of you are quick to make assumptions and from those assumptions, needless fear and concerns spread like wildfire.
