The Americans appreciated the problem of ED way back in the 70's and started clinics which provided penile injections of a drug which increased the blood flow and hence gave an erection.
Now...at the Royal Society of Medicine in London around 1978 ( I wasn't there so this is second hand information) an American Urological surgeon was invited to give a lecture on the results of his long term studies of the penile injection for ED.
A young man, confidently took to the rostrum and gave a polished performance on his work and received quite an appreciative response from the audience.
When the applause had settled, he unzipped his trousers, pulled out quite an impressive erect penis and said:

"This is one i prepared earlier."
