If a woman with the "right stuff" emerges, fine but surely it's unscientific to decree that the first person on Mars will be a woman.

On a more serious note I am more than happy a woman goes first or at any time, providing she is the best of ALL candidates.
It's not really stupid is it WR? It is yet another story that shows discrimination is rife and we are away from equality.
Yeah, why not. There's no 'best' person to be the first on Mars. There'll be a whole bunch of suitable candidates so why shouldn't it be a woman, seeing as they never got a look in on the Moon.
Sigourney Weaver would be a good choice.
