Detectives have promised to learn lessons after the groundbreaking trial of a father accused of allowing his six-year-old daughter to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) collapsed.

A judge at Bristol crown court ordered that the 29-year-old father be found not guilty of child cruelty and criticised aspects of the case against the man.

They need a specific law against it.
^ The problem is that it is never carried out in the UK. Always abroad normally Pakistan.We can't make laws that can be used to prosecute something that happens outside the UK.
Is this the case that was covered in last night's documentary on tv?
Eddie, //The problem is that it is never carried out in the UK. //

Not true.

//Always abroad //

Not true.

//normally Pakistan//

Not true.
You honestly think it's not carried out here?

It doesn't matter, a specific law for doing it or allowing it.
Eddie. Read the above article.
If as the artical suggests, it is taking place in the UK then the existing law covers it. This trial failed because the police could not produce any actual evidence that the FGM was carried out in the UK. That is not likely to change as no one will be willing to give evidence.
The trial collapsed because one expert stated that the girl had undergone FGM, the other expert that she hadn't.

Changes in the law would not alter the experts opinions.

This girl had undergone at least two intrusive examinations - it is not just a matter of taking a quick peek as some people seem to think.
Eddie, //This trial failed because the police could not produce any actual evidence that the FGM was carried out in the UK. //

Where did you get that from? As far as I can see the trial collapsed because on further examination no evidence was found.
Those that endorse FGM (which does NOT include me) consider it as a matter of 'Honour' or a religious necessity. They form a tight knit group that is virtually impenetrable to outsiders. They are never going to give evidence or allow it to be collected.
Eddie makes it up as he goes along.
To answer my own question, it was the case covered in last night's documentary, 'The FGM Detectives', Channel 4 at 10pm.
ummmm, he does indeed - always.

Ken, Ladybirder told me about that programme. I'll get it on catch-up.
naomi thanks, you have just succinctly proved my point.
The FGM 'community' will NEVER allow evidence to be gathered ,that is why 'no evidence was found' it has been intentionally hidden.
As a matter for me........are these FGM cases, civil or criminal?
Eddie, //naomi thanks, you have just succinctly proved my point. //

Which point was that? One of the many inaccurate points you've made? I think not.
"The problem is that it is never carried out in the UK. Always abroad normally Pakistan.We can't make laws that can be used to prosecute something that happens outside the UK. " - eddie, there was a law change some years ago that allowed prosecution if someone did something abroad that was illegal in Britain, not sure as to the extent of that law, no doubt the judge will be along to clarify. I think that's how they nicked some sex tourists to Thialand etc, possibly Gary Glitter.
sqad, criminal.
Thanks naomi...then it has to be proved "beyond reasonable doubt" and that is a big ask in these cases.
Is this abnormal vagina likely to be caused by FGM?

If one Dr says yes and another says no.......then there is no case to answer...........difficult.

I presume that will be the same in Iceland....if any get to trial ..re circumcision.
Sqad...there are different types of mutilation.
