Not sure how much sympathy I have for the "it's made me overdrawn" mob now howling for Tesco's blood?

I always check all payments have gone through (especially if times are tight) and balance the books each week/month - if there were some unclaimed payments I'd make sure I kept the cash in my account against the day that they were eventually processed?

Agree with that, I get a weekly statement from my Banks ATM and keep a written record of all transactions including S/Os to check against statements, not had a problem.

I do use contactless more these days - and some places (especially pubs for some reason) do take a few days to claim the cash - but I think I would notice if it never went out.
I am still a pen and paper girl when it comes to my money - every time I order/buy something either in store or online it goes down in my transaction book.

Then as far as I'm concerned it's gone and I can't spend it again.

Any refunds are added back in later.

There are folk saying the same thing happened when shopping with Asda online.....payments processed very late.....
I should imagine those were reasonably large orders......so surely they must have noticed payment hadn't been taken?
Difficult when you're on a tight budget I know.....but surely there is more need to keep track of finances then......and notice a not taken payment...?
Checking your balance online is the simple answer. Once you pay by card, even though it doesn't show on your statement immediately, the payment will be 'ring-fenced' by the bank, i.e. the money is not available for spending. My online statement gives me two figures; the statement balance and the actual balance,which includes any payments yet to be processed.
I just assume that the stores will get things right. I do look at my bank statements and credit card bills to check that no unknowns have taken money, but I don't keep a list of everything I spend.

I can understand not noticing if one payment has not been taken, but you would have to be exceptionally dim to miss NINE. More likely that they thought they had got away with not paying, and then were narked when Tesco caught up.
Or they just don't check their bank statements and only check the balance.
Not everyone spends their time checking every transaction. One can see why folk are genuinely annoyed. The money is owed so should be paid, but how long should a trader be able to delay ? 6 months ? A year ? Forever ? Tend to think that there ought to be an incentive to act within 30 days. Companies wanting you to pay bills tend to apply penalties for late payment. Should work the other way around too.
I seem to remember that cheques only had a valid life of 6 months (possibly 6 months and 1 day), so perhaps that applies to credit card transactions as well.
It shouldn't though. Using a debit card is suppose to be similar to using cash.
I bank online and also manually record every transaction in an accounts book, so like Mamyalynne as soon as I've written a transaction in my book as far as I'm concerned the money has gone.

I always know to the penny my finances, so I just don't understand why some people are so cavalier.

Some people are just not natural book-keepers. In just the same way that some people are really tidy and some are really messy.
Since using a debit card is suppose to be similar to using cash then surely the debit should be immediate. Or it's forfeited as if the receiver had dropped it and not found where the money went ;-)
Don’t think it has anything to do with not being natural bookkeepers.
I would think most people know how much they are paid, and how much their monthly debits are. So they have an idea of how much they have to spend. They would notice if multiple bills had not been deducted.

I could understand it if they have lots of money and they don’t need to worry about what they spend, but these people are complaining that the deductions are sending them overdrawn, which indicates they are on a tight budget, so should know their daily/weekly balance.
i always check my account for sainsburys, i wouldn't dream of just letting it go.

I strongly suspect these people thought Tesco had lost/forgotten their payment and that they'd got away with it, so they spent the money on something else. It's always someone else's fault.

that's what i think, that they just assumed that the mo ney had been forgotten about, rather a stupid way to look at it.
