Given Jeremy Corbyn has said in the past he stands for "kinder, gentler politics", why did he refuse to condemn McDonnell's statement that Esther McVey is a "stain of inhumanity".?

McDonnell is, and always has been, a nasty piece of work, and certainly doesn't stand for kinder, gentler politics, so I find it strange that Corbyn refused take the opportunity to, at the very least, say he didn't agree with McDonnell comments.

Bluntly, because he needs McDonnell.
McDonnell sounds a nasty piece of work, as to why Corbyn has refused to comment is because he is as guilty.
The more outrageous or obviously useless, the more they know where the bodies are buried, that's all.
Nothing more than expected from this anti British IRA supporting yobbo.
He's a real charmer, isn't he.
fits nicely in the nasty party.
Crikey1 Lucky Trump didn't say it! We'd never have heard the last of it around here!
A stain on humanity was over the top. He was preaching to the converted, so he probably got excited.
The comment was made in 2014 and sirfaced in 2016. Not sure why it is in the news again ?
Because this is why
Ms McVey’s appointment to the Cabinet in Theresa May’s January reshuffle has prompted renewed scrutiny of the remarks and now Andrea Leadsom, the Commons Leader, has condemned them as “utterly disgusting”.
Standard lefty hate speech. So utterly convinced of the moral superiority of their own ideology, that pretty much anything can be said about the 'enemy'.
The comment by McDonnell was roundly condemned in 2016.
Is it going to be resurrected everytime she changes job?

It was not a nice thing to say, but it was not said in parluament or even in public, but in a private Labour Party meeting which was taped.
.....so it begs the question what else are they saying in their "private" meetings?
Er, they are private, so we won’t know.
// Is it going to be resurrected everytime she changes job? //

Hopefully yes gromit. People need to be regularly reminded that he said it.
it was not just one comment though was it...
he seems a particularly nasty man,

It's in the news, Gromit, because Corbyn was asked about it yesterday, and swerved the question.
It seems fair game to drag things people have said in the past back up when they increase in relevance in present circumstances.

Toby Young, Donald Trump and Jared O'Mara being recent examples.

John McDonnell should fall into this camp and have to answer his critics, definitely.

It's actually one of the smarter things the Tories have done lately. Promoting McVey puts McDonnell's statements back in the spotlight.
MCDonnell is a right nasty piece of work.

I honestly don't thing JC is though. His politics don't fit mine at all but I think he does mean well so I guess the answer to the OP is the first post from Krom.
At a trade union conference McDonnell stated that, " the single act he'd most like to do to improve the World would be to go back and assassinate Thatcher". This is despite the fact that his mates in the IRA had tried it in real time.
Hasn't mikey demanded his resignation, sacking, sentencing yet?
He's usually like greased lightning in matters moral.
