it has been argued (including in this forum) that someone who does not identify with their birth gender, transforms and is legally of their chosen gender, is in fact representative of that gender. for instance, a former "x-y" person who identifies as female IS a woman, and is entitled to be recognised as a woman, right?

in which case, why does the labour party need a "self defining" gender category? if you're (now) male or female, regardless of how you may have been, you are what you are now, right? or is Mr Corbyn saying that a transgender woman isn't really a woman?

well I think the Labour party may have more pressing issues on whether a geezer who thinks he's bird is a bird. Their in grained anti semitism for a start.
Looking at some of the Labour MPs their gender is very questionable.
Yes. What is the point of a 'self defining' gender category for if we are all able to say we are what we want to be?

I define myself as a multi billionaire. Doesn't make it true though.

But where politics is concerned as long as they can get a few more votes from minorities they will do anything, say anything and benanything.
It's hilarious when these people tie themselves up in knots trying to be all things to all men. (excuse the pun)
No answers from the resident lefties I see. Question must be too difficult or doesnt match the idealist agenda's they have.
Self-defining politicians:
I give you Mr Mark Reckless - resigned from the Tory Party, stood as a UKIP candidate and eventually lost his seat :-)

I'm sure there are others of all parties
So a bloke, who still has all his bits, can turn round and say he 'self-defines' (whatever that may mean) himself as a woman and therefore be eligible for election to the women's category? You couldn't make it up.
How to get on all-women shortlists: say you're a woman.
