I ask this because what crime as Reggie committed, it was an off the cuff remark, which shouldn't have offended anyone.

There can be Fat Jews the same as Fat Christians or Fat Muslims, it seems these days one cannot make certain descriptive remarks about anyone, they have not done any physical harm, nor has the Jewish community made any complaints, at least not to my knowledge.

Well, we can speculate or believe he has stepped down freely.

Without anything to the contrary, I'll believe him - it's a shame though, very popular guy.
Perhaps he will think before he makes any more remarks like this AOG.
I don't care much about TOTP. I just hope he will be continuing with his excellent documentarys.

Personally I would rather he stood up to all this PC nonsense. What he said really should not be any issue whatsoever.
Personally, I'd rather have a fat Jew looking after my money than 'the brothers'.
So, imo, what he said was wrong but not offensive.
YMB....being a tad hypocritiacl I see !

When the Labour Party was accused of being antisemtic, you are lots of other people were spitting feathers.

Now that Yates has made this daft remark, suddenly its
" PC nonsense "

Make your mind up !
Unfortunately the term "Fat Jew" carries a resonance "Fat Christian" would not.
Nevertheless he apologised honestly, and has only "resigned" from doing TOTP (which surely to Isaac and Abraham they should consign to history now, rather than bringing it back every Christmas for one show only) rather than sent into exile.
lol mikey yes that thought has crossed my mind, although in fairness the Labour Party has been rather harder on one or two of its members than the BBC has
//'I've hurt many people': Reggie Yates //
am i the only one that finds that hard to believe?
If those in the labour party had only referred to some hypothetical person as a 'fat jew' I wouldnt care.

But they didnt, and dont, do they. BIG difference.

I tip my hat to anyone who uses a phone to post on AB.

Bloody annoying!
Oh dear, his fat lady has sung as far as TOTP is concerned then.
Ha ha mikey4444

You got there before me.

God knows how the AB Editor is going to deal with all the skid marks left on this website, what with the handbrake turns that some are making.

Back to AOG’s question - it’s impossible to know for sure, but knowing his telly works, I suspect a decision was made by the show’s producers, and then fed back to Yates’ management team.

The term in itself technically is purely descriptive, as in, “Tall newscaster”, or “Funny bus driver”.

However, it’s the context of the description which makes it dodgy.

We should understand context, and in the context of what Yates was saying, there is an undercurrent of anti-semitism.

It’s code.
It's not just that he said fat Jew, it's the implication that they are running the music business. The allegation that they formed some sort of international cabal, trying to take over the world, was not uncommon in the 1930s - and not just in Germany.
jno ....well said !

it was the Jews that did it !
I would suggest that if the BBC had sacked Mr Yates, they would have said so, and not permitted him the luxury of saving face by saying he had resigned if this was not the case.

In terms of the remark he made, it was careless, and does infer a cultural stereotype - as advised in the link, the inference is that an old-style Jewish manager is profiteering from his charges.

On that basis, reference to a 'fat Jew' has different connotations than reference to a far member of another faith.

AOG is of course entitled to think that this is a fuss about nothing, as his OP suggests, but others obviously don't see it the same way - including Mr Yates himself.
Well said Andy....after all, Yates himself has made the following statement ::::

"I can see clearly that the words I used reinforced offensive stereotypes, and that there is no context which would justify such remarks.""

left winger is anti Semitic, nooooo!
TTT,
// left winger is anti Semitic //

Because black people cannot be Conservative.

I see the incontinence is still a problem.
i did not mention colour gromit.
