When Ed Milliband first suggested this a few years ago, he was widely ridiculed by the Tory Party. And yet, this "new" Tory policy is, in essence, the same thing,

So maybe Ed wasn't so daft after all !

I think it may turn out to be ineffective - i agree the market isn't working properly but i think this won't change anything. It's just a sop to give the impression something is being done. The way the market works those who are on standard tariffs because they never bother to switch could save a bit by this but as the average price won't change others will have to pay more as deals to attract switchers will be les attractive.
It'll be interesting to see how it works. Obviously you can't cap actual charges as some use/waste a lot of energy- eg Buck palace must use more than i do and I must use more than a 1 bedroom flat.

There was a programme on radio 4 about it where some energy market experts explored the options and discussed the consequences danny so unless the energy experts have overlooked an option I am not optimistic. But of course when we have the full plans we can comment more specifically

As a regular energy switcher and avid listener to Martin Lewis and other financial programmes it's an area I feel I know something about. But maybe the announcement will contain some surprises/original ideas

Privatisation was supposed to bring competition and bring down prices.
The fact that the Government are having to interfere in the free market means it isn't working.
When the cap was mentioned in the Conservative manifesto, it sounded a lot more promising than what they have actually announced.
At the moment there are 18 million who are paying more because they do not bother to switch. This cap will just encourage more people not to switch.
No wonder the big six energy companies aren't squealing too much about this, they will probably make even more money.

Its seems that the Tories, stuck as they are in finding any new and innovative polices, are now presenting Labour polices as their own.

In addition to this, the Tories are now saying that they will be building more Council houses, although the extra 5000 home a year that their "new" policy announcement will build is hardly going to touch the sides.

Personally I dont see what the fuss is. If people are too lazy to switch then it really is their fault. There has been enough put about in the media so the vast majority should be aware and switching has never been easier for most.

I am delighted that such a sensible Labour plan is now being adopted by the this present Tory Government.

But I am still unsure why they have had such an about turn ?
