Why wasn't it deemed unlawful under the Religious discrimination act?

Well it would have been if they had banned Islam.

Which section does it contravene?
A bit of over reaction in my mind, rather than banning one branch of Faith make it open to all others too - far fairer.

We've all been to Fairs where there has been a stall we'd rather scurry past than browse.
"Balliol Christian Union (CU) was told the college’s student body, the JCR, wanted the freshers’ fair to be a “secular space”, according to Oxford’s student newspaper Cherwell.

Eventually the CU was told that a single multi-faith stall would be allowed to display leaflets, though no representatives would be allowed to staff it, according to leaked emails seen by the paper. Balliol CU boycotted this option."
It wasn't the college it was the students that organise it, that made the decision.
//a single multi-faith stall //

Now that I would like to see. I wonder who would throw the first punch? :-)

Ah, they need a lesson in diversity then?
youngmagbog and the author of this question needs to write clearer less misleading headlines!
"Balliol is a tolerant, friendly college where students of all faiths and none are free to worship and express their beliefs openly."

Just not to impressionable young newcomers who will be whisked straight to the union bar and fed snakebite and Aftershock until they vomit their stomach lining, all in the name of education.
Then well done Balliol Students.

Religion has no place in education, and attempts by any faith to indocrinate students should be fought.

It is the Students' Fair, so they can decide what kind of exhibitor they there, and exclude those that they don't.

Then perhaps you should get in touch with the Expess's sub-Editor, this is the headline he chose:

Oxford College bans Christian Union from freshers' fair as it is 'alienating & homophobic'

Incidentally I did not 'write' my headline I did in fact 'typed' it.

But I am sure that youngmagbog will join me in apologising to you for not taking into consideration your complete lack of simple understanding.
In fact if you read the article, it seems to have been one undergrad who made (or led) the organisers' decision and the rest of the student body sat on it with great vigour.

Let's be 'FAIR'.
// Incidentally I did not 'write' my headline I did in fact 'typed' it. //

Yep.
All writing stopped with the invention of the typewriter in 1874.
Students of University age should have grown out of Faerie Tales.
Rude much!!!!
ANOTHEOLDGIT, which specific section of the law was broken?
When you see people using phrases like 'potential harm', you know you are in the realm of young people whose academic intelligence is directly inversely proportional to their life experience and their understanding of the real world they have yet to live in.

The list of 'potential harm' situations for students living away from home for the first time could be a thousand pages long, but in terms of relevance, the 'potential harm' of a Christian society would still be at the bottom of page one-thousand.

Christian students should have as much right to promote their faith as any other - or indeed non-faith students, that's freedom of expression, and should not be supressed without seriously good reason, and 'potential harm' is far to woolly and right-on the be given house room.
AOG - // But I am sure that youngmagbog will join me in apologising to you for not taking into consideration your complete lack of simple understanding. //

Let's do a deal shall we?

Islay won't argue with you about your stunningly patronising attitude, and she won't pick you up on spelling your supporter's name wrongly - that way the thread doesn't get de-railed.
OK Andy I won't! lol
It's up to them who they have at their fresher's fair. It's the bu115hlt right-on psychobabble reasoning they always come out with that's irritating.
