Bent as a nine-bob note. (the UN)
stop with the threats and with-hold funding til they sort themselves out.
It's been obvious for years that the UN are useless.
Sometimes the only way to make these organisations actually sit up and listen is to threaten to take the gravy train away. Otherwise what impetus is there to reform, improvement or to adapt?

I think this sort of rhetoric will be coming up more and more over the coming years when the net contributors, regardless of origin or what it is for, start to wake up to the fact their/our money is being wasted rather than doing the good it was supposed to do.
who cares about the UN, they have proved about as useful as a chocolate teapot years ago.
The UN is not useless, however it undoubtedly needs reform. Mrs May's speech was welcome as it underlined the need for global cooperation, and the dangers to the world if it does not perform more effectively. The threat to without a third of the annual commitment is not as dramatic as it sounds, but sometimes it is necessary to adopt hard hitting measures to preserve and reform what is vital.
She also distanced herself further from Trump's position as outlined in his speech, and that was welcome. If Britain is trying to forge a post-Brexit role for itself, then the current US administration is making that easier just now, because plainly there are obvious dividing lines and differences in approach - for now, anyway
As with Trump's speech to the UN, this is meaningless posturing. The UN's budget is $5.5 billion, and Theresa May is going to be out of office in the near future.
//Theresa May is going to be out of office in the near future//
I doubt that the Conservatives will want to change the leadership before the next election. It would be too disruptive.
Virtually nobody thinks May will lead them into the next election, Danny. Not even senior tories. And if they're going to replace her, it needs to be reasonably soon so that her successor has enough time to build a record by 2022.
There is undoubtedly an element of posturing in this, but far better to say what Mrs May has said than either say nothing or deliver a pointless Trump-like rant
I think that she will remain at least until we have left the EU in 2019
// a pointless Trump-like rant //

You mean the one that kick started this debate?

A full overhaul of the UN is well overdue. Bloated and bureaucratic.
"You mean the one that kick started this debate?"

I think this debate is about the British PM's speech, and important to note how different it was to Trump's: like I say, not hard these days for Britain to plough an independent line from the White House

"A full overhaul of the UN is well overdue. Bloated and bureaucratic. "
It certainly is: the Security Council for a start, and the various organisations could do with rationalizing and sharing resources more.
Look at the "Human Rights" branch: it has some members you would do a double take about :-)
Some countries fear an effective UN and it is time serious effort was made to address that.
Virtually nobody thinks May will lead them into the next election including senior tories.
Where is there a link for this or is it more wishful thinking, or possible inside information?.
The point I am making is that it is very doubtful May would have had the balls to say it if DT hadn't first.
^^
Yep, monkey see, monkey do.
It's common knowledge that the party is planning a replacement, Dave. It's just a question of when.

I'm not sure you're being fair in that, ymb -- May and Trump seem to have enough different about their approaches that May would have made at least a very similar speech regardless of what Trump said.

Or, put another way, i don't think she needs Trump to give her balls.
Kromo - thanks, appreciate that although she has made it known that she is to remain until after Brexit which will do fine.
as I've said many times Tezza will see brexit through. In 2019 DD will take over and continue the important work of wiping the floor with KJJ and Layba, simples.
Sure. Let's go with that.
