Speaking as a bloke I find the whole thing disgusting , both parents and anyone who performs FGM should be prosecuted.

Yes.....I noticed that and the irony is that she is a FEMALE doctor.
I hope they throw her in the slammer.
its bit like abortion used to be

not that I am saying it will be re-legaised

[said that the body in the cellar of Dr Crippens house was not Belle but an abortion he had screwed up]

it is ironic that she is a female doctor, but its appalling that this barbarous practice continues to haunt little girls and women. I hope they throw her in jail for a long time.
emmie.....another way that one could look ate problem, is that if SOMEBODY is going to procure FGM somewhere in the world it may just as well be a medical qualified person, with expertise and sterile environment to provide a safe outcome.
She, I suppose could argue on those lines.
It's not unusual for women to perform this procedure. The West Midlands Police is against prosecuting the parents for FGM

Question Author
hc why can't they prosecute the parents if they are instrumental in this torture.
Question Author
so what the police are saying is better to educate the parents, but it's generally too late by then, the damage is done.
Agreed, emmie - but prosecution is too late, also. Would a child who has suffered the horrors of FGM benefit from her parents being imprisoned?

Would the parents of a child who has had this procedure seek medical help for her at any time for any reason (eg meningitis) if they know they would be prosecuted when the mutilation is discovered?

Would a girl who had this done, her parents imprisoned, grow up feeling like a freak?

so live with the parents who did this to you, no thanks, i rather they weren't part of the child's life. Women suffer their whole lives because of this, not just at that moment.
//Women suffer their whole lives because of this,//

and in the societies where this is practiced, women suffer when it hasn't been done; an uncut female is virtually unmarriageable, which might explain why female relatives are keen to ensure their female offspring receive it.
I agree that is a monstrous process - but taking a child away from an otherwise loving family can be monstrous, too. I really don't know what the answer is.
Question Author
better to be unmarried than have your genitals mutilated surely.
The more i read about FGM the more i am convinced that prosecution is the way to go, with all it's faults its better than letting the perpetrators off scot free.
Question Author
if you love your child, how could you subject her to it.
Sadly, the highest incidence of FGM being carried out in the Middle/Far East IS by women(and not qualified women at that)They are usually the "wise(huh)women" of the village.A few years ago a family (all born and bred in the UK) holidayed with their relations in a village in Libya. The Mother left her 12 year old daughter with the villagers, including her Grandmother, for the day. When she returned they had FGM'ed her daughter. The granny couldn't understand what the fuss was about.Tradition has a lot to answer for.
//if you love your child, how could you subject her to it. //

but that's the conundrum, isn't it? in a society that expects the practice, if you love your child how could you not do it? to give in to societies (like ours) that have "outlawed" (allegedly - I say that because there's virtually no will to prosecute) the practice is to deny your child a place in her own culture.
Speaking as a bloke I find the whole thing disgusting , both parents and anyone who performs FGM should be prosecuted.
Just a thought. In the USA 99% of male babies are circumcised as a matter of routine.Could this be considered as MGM?Please don't trot out the old (and disproven) "cleanliness" argument, as it won't wash(sorry about the pun).
Question Author
OB one wonders what kind of people would do this to a child. The pain it causes and the lifelong trouble that ensues make me wonder what is wrong with the parents for allowing such a practice.
