It doesn't say anything about local residents.
this in Germany, where there seems to be any number of far right groups, maybe they are one of those, will read the whole thing in a minute.
Because the group concerned seem to be right-wing activists/extremists rather than simply local residents.
Presumably whoever named them so knows more about the group's actions than we do.
They're not called 'citizens for Marbach' tho.
no they are not citizens of the town.

The group call themselves, "Citizens for Erfurt", and the village of Marbach where the Mosque is to be built is in the area of Erfurt.

Doesn't look like it had much effect:

A spokesman for the Ahmadiyya community in Erfurt, Mohammad Suleman Malik, said the community does not see the crosses themselves as provocative.

“The cross is not a provocation. On the contrary: It would be nice if churches, synagogues and mosques stood side by side. We would welcome a church construction in Marbach in the immediate vicinity [of the planned mosque],” Malik told Thuringen24. He was astonished, however, that “opponents expressing their aversion for the mosque’s construction through this action would utilize a religious symbol like this.”
it says citizens (for) erfurt, not citizens (of) erfurt, which makes it a whole different meaning.
^They're not real Muslims.
Marbach is a small village on the outskirts of the town of Erfurt.
As Jesus is an Islam prophet and messenger of Allah, Muslims will not be offended by a cross.

You'd think objectors would know that.
Because hammering giant crosses into a site is not protesting, it is being intentionally antagonistic.

I think they would welcome being labelled as right-wing extremists, since that is clearly what they are.
//As Jesus is an Islam prophet and messenger of Allah, Muslims will not be offended by a cross. //

jesus indeed has prophet status in islam. but the attitude of islam to the cross isn't that straightforward, since muslims reject the notion that jesus was the son of god, or in the resurrection; and the cross itself is considered to be idolatory, another no-no for islam.

Try displaying a cross in Saudi and chances are you'll end up on one.

I think many Muslims will view the cross as an offensive religious symbol, HC, as two posters have pointed out already. That's partly because Islam denies that Jesus died on the cross: "..it only seemed that way". So the cross will be viewed by them as the symbol of a false belief. See the following:

http://www.qsep.com/modules.php?name=ilm&d_op=article&sid=968

Muslim eschatology teaches that Jesus will return to complete the subjugation of the whole world to Islam and will break all the crosses. See the section on Isa (Jesus) in this document:

http://www.faqendtimes.com/what-does-islam-teach-about-the-end-times/

And here's a fatwa on the subject (pigs chucked in for good measure):

It pees me off that just because some people want to stick up for their own country they are automatically called 'right wing extremists'! Personally, I applaud them ...
ANOTHEOLDGIT, are there many examples of planning objectors being described as right-wing extremists? What reason would there be for the huge crosses other than for intimidation?
I stayed not to far from Marbach and worked in Erfurt, I would say they are very anti foreigner ( I was told that you can get away with killing a Turk )
and presumably they are describing the mosque as a nest of radicalised moslems

BUT

it is the ahmadiyya again - they are regarded as heretics by the other moslems

The Glasgow muslim who was butchered ( literallly ) by the crazed Brummie asian was an ahmaddiya

he was the one who had put up a notice : to my dear christian neighbours have an extremely Happy Christmas
sentence - death ....

there is also a thread running on the best punishment for blasphemy run of course by the freedom lving BBC
