emmie - //so some think it a good idea, whilst others think that they should string them up by their proverbial's, not one i advocate by the way. // As always, these are the two schools of thought that emerge when this subject is debated. Personally, even when taking in the severity of the crimes that can result from mental illness - and this is just one of them - I am...

Possibly.

Because this is such an emotive issue, the gut reaction of most parents is for castration, but with a rusty tin lid as opposed to chemicals.

But in a civilised society, we have to make sure that we protect the vulnerable among us, and that means that paedophilia has to be addressed from a sane and detached perspective.

I am sure that chemical castration would work, but cases are individual, and there can be no 'one size fits all' answer to something as complex as this.

I am sure everything is dealt with on a case-by-case basis now, and that should continue.

The emotional urges of protective fearful outraged parents are absolutely understandable, but have no place in this situation.

it is an emotive subject, but one that should be discussed openly, not just on a/b.
Who knows, perhaps if this present 'liberal thinking' continues at the pace we see today, paedophiles will not be classes as criminals.

Instead we will be asked, not to condemn them but to understand them i.e. they can't help it, they were born like it, it is a mental condition and they need treating not criminalising.

Treating!!!! may we suggest a couple of bricks?
yes agree a couple of bricks and a big p tattoo on forehead.
Question Author
not helpful really, basically the upshot is there aren't enough prisons to accommodate them, so the possible answer is a chemical administered once every three weeks to curb these abusive urges, makes sense to me.
How many would turn up every three weeks year in year out for the rest of their lives?
Question Author
administered by a doctor, either that they go to prison, where they won't be treated with kid gloves.

it's surprising just how many countries go for this option. places you wouldn't think would adopt it.
AOG - //Who knows, perhaps if this present 'liberal thinking' continues at the pace we see today, paedophiles will not be classes as criminals.

It is nothing to do with 'liberal thinking'. It is to do with finding a workable solution for a seriously complex and difficult problem.

//Instead we will be asked, not to condemn them but to understand them i.e. they can't help it, they were born like it, it is a mental condition and they need treating not criminalising. //

I think we are asked that already- as we should be.

The issue with paedophilia is that it can lead to child abuse, and that is the most abhorrent crime imaginable.

But the result of a mental condition should not bar the sufferer from receiving treatment, because that its what a civilised society does.

Centuries ago, an old woman with schizophrenia and a cat would have been burned as a witch. Our understanding of mental illness has moved on as we have become more civilised, and that civilisation requires that we address these final taboos of illness and reaction with compassion and a willingness to find treatments, because that is what civilises all of us.

//Treating!!!! may we suggest a couple of bricks? //

You can suggest it - why not red hot pincers or hanging by the privates?

This is exactly the kind of emotive language that breeds fear and anger - the next step is the flaming torches and pitchforks.

This is 2017 - we must find ways of dealing with our mentally ill.
Without a doubt, I 100% agree with it the dirty S-ds.
Let me pre-empt the inevitable question which I know will be on its way, because it always is when this type of debate crops up -

"How would you feel if it was your child who was abused? You'd change your tune then!"

The answer is - it's not, so I enjoy the luxury of debating from a perspective of detached interest. If my child was a victim, I would post on the basis of how I felt, but thankfully they are not, so I can't.
A.H. I've worked in the Health care with them, they are devious, this is from a person that knows not by figures.
Its not often that I see eye to eye with andy-hughes but he's certainly the voice of reason here.
As the treatment is already being used as trial I suggest that we wait to see how it turns out.
In the future shall we then see the destruction of all prisons, to be then replaced with mental institutions?

Taking on board that all criminals must be mad to commit the deeds they do, can we say that they need mental treatment rather than prison?
TWR - //A.H. I've worked in the Health care with them, they are devious, this is from a person that knows not by figures. //

Deviousness is not a bar to treatment for a mental illness.

No of course not.

Criminal activity and mental illness are mutually exclusive, you punish one and treat the other.

There are overlaps - some mentally ill people commit crimes, but in this instance, paedophilia is a mental illness and needs to be addressed as such.

The casual burglar is greedy and feckless, not mentally ill - there is no illness to treat, but there is an attitude to society that requires a lesson to be taught.
AOG, the majority of prisoners suffer from a mental illness or addiction of one form or another. Prison does nothing to remedy the reason as to WHY people are incarcerated in the first place.
No it's not the answer. A Length of cheesewire is.
