Haaaaaa! You can.
AOG

The point I'm making is that if a Christian or Jewish person can be accommodated because of their religious beliefs, why can't a Muslim?

You say this:

Simply because those practising Christian or Jews are not employed on a Sunday, but if a Muslim is not prepared to handle certain goods on every day of the week, then they must be prepared not to be employed at all.

So this means that the owner of a business must alter his or her schedules to factor in those who refuse to work one day at the weekend, right?

They are still employed by the firm, but their personal circumstances are taken into consideration.

And remember, if a Muslim refuses to handle certain products, in a store as large as a supermarket, it's relatively easy to assign them tasks that mean they never have to come into contact with said products.

However, unless M&S have the ability to alter the Gregorian calendar, it will be impossible not to 'employ' Christians on Saturdays and Sundays. They can only schedule around those days.

Do you think that Christians should be refused jobs if they don't want to work on Sundays?

And do you think we should encourage companies who employ such Christians to sack them if the staff are unwilling to go to work on Sundays?
oh good grief....
trt's gone shopping ;-)

How would a Muslim delivery driver know if Alcohol or Pork, were inside when delivering Xmas or Easter hampers.

And if they knew there was, could they refuse to take on board and delivery?
Ask M&S, tesco, etc, trt. It's their problem not yours isn't it? You clearly hadn't noticed any problems at M&S in the last 3 years until you read the old out of date article
Three years ago M&S outlined their policy (no idea if it's changed in that time), if anyone doesn't agree with it they can shop elsewhere.
trt - have some pride in the fact that you live in a country where practising discriminatory policies in employment of staff would be illegal.

They would not.

Dunno - you'd have to check with whichever supermarket, food supplier, or catering company you're interested in. I don't think there is anyone on AB with sufficient knowledge of these industries or their practices to answer.
I think that this thread has just about run out of steam guys !

Out of interest - will you be boycotting any other stores which do not force Christians and Jewish people to work on Sundays and Saturdays respectively?

And how come it's taken you three years after the article was published, to post the question???

About 55 years ago I went to my doctor and asked about going on the pill.
He told me he couldn't prescribe them as he was Roman Catholic and suggested I found another doctor. I did.
As I've stated I had a GP like that - simply went to the doc in the next room for family planning matters.
That was 55 years ago. Things have moved on!
Mushroom posted it three years ago, Sp.....x
And trt, what if the delivery driver got to the address and decided the customer was homosexual. Eeeek! What would happen then? Would his religion allow him to deliver to such a person I wonder?
Aren't we making a mountain out of a very small molehill over this issue ?

I will close the discussion on this point:::

What if I got a piece of pork/bone stuck in my throat. I am rushed to A&E choking to death, but the only doctor on duty was a Muslim.

Would he be in his religious rights, to refuse to treat me?

Happy New Year Folks.
