Parliament - not just Government - has a say in enacting Article 50, according to the High Court's decision just announced.

As a Brexit MP just said it would be electoral suicide for any MP that votes against it.
More delay for Brexit
Question Author
Perhaps not suicidal for MPs who represent constituencies which voted Remain.
For our MP it will be very difficult: a reluctant "Remain" Tory with the Lib Dems breathing down his neck.
Having said that I dpnt expect parliament to vote against. Nonetheless this is the right decision. If we want our parliament getting its powers back ...:-)
Just allow a half hour to debate then whip them all in and it'll take minutes more. It'll be over in half a day and meanwhile anyone important can be getting on with more critical stuff outside of the debating chamber. Exercise in pointlessness. The people have spoken; get on with it.
They did not speak decisively and many did not know what they were saying:-)
Having this debated by elected representatives is good
Excellent news for both sides, we were in danger of being 'railroaded' into it without proper discussion.
The government are appealing this to the Supreme Court, but with all three Judges unanimous it is a forgone conclusion that it will be upheld!
More delay probably at least an extra year before A50 can be triggered
( if ever!)
Well, this could be fun... *grabs popcorn*
Interesting that 32% of the electorate voted out and this is described by a government spokesman as "the will of the people", but for a simple strike the same party want it to be illegal to strike unless 80% of the union to vote in favour.
/Even if unions achieve the 50% turnout, they then need 40% of those eligible to vote to back the action. That amounts to an 80% vote in favour of strikes - far higher than that needed to win a general election.//
^^ Good point !
We voted to leave the EU to reaffirm the sovereignty of the UK Parliament. It would be a bit odd if Parliament was by passed for this important change.
With the sinking pound causing rising road fuel prices and soon rising gas and electric prices, together with the predicted sharp price increases predicted for imported food, electrical, electronic and all the other imports we need, I think some MPs will be very careful of how they vote.
Oh heck................. Not going to be as simple as we thought ?
And in one swoop the period of uncertainty has just been extended!
Why didn't the high court make the same ruling when Government decided to hold a referendum?
A victory for common sense and justice. Parliament should be deciding what happens, not a clique at Number Ten.
One can not compare a free referendum to right wing oppression of the unions.
IMO parliament has little to add.

They can debate the new contracts/agreements going forward if they like; but exit has already been decided and if they try to thwart it then the public know which party to vote in next time.

Meanwhile they could schedule 1 to 1:30 pm this afternoon for the exit debate and vote it though mid afternoon.
