People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice. As I understand it, the burkini, which is a garment designed to preserve the modesty of Muslim women who wish to sunbathe or swim at public beaches, is banned, and the police will enforce that law, as they have done here.

Well the law should be upheld by the police but the description of their method sounds more than a little harsh. Were they really telling her to simply strip off as the headline suggested ? And I was unaware that a hijab was banned too. Sounds a little far down the slope of telling folk what to wear, to me. I think this law needs time to settle in, and the police could use a little training on how to handle situations.
I have absolutely no problems with the burkini, only with full-face covering, which it doesn't do.
On a recent visit to Cornwall, on the beach near Weymouth there were hundreds of surfers, male and female, in black wet-suits which are no different in appearance.
We should leave the burkini alone and concentrate on outlawing the hijab and burka.

AOG...its a daft and unenforceable law. France must have 1000's of miles of beaches, and the Police can't possibly patrol all of them, all the time. Also, what about all the women that may be wearing ordinary clothes....are we to insist that all women should strip off into a bikini ?
What trouble is this causing anybody ? Whether women are allowed to wear a Burkina or not won't make the people of Nice any safer....all it allows is for other people to show their naked (!) prejudice.

There is a perception, boosted I believe by the media, that Muslim women are subjugated and forced to wear burkas, hijabs, and similar, and are unhappy because of it.
There is a distinct possibility - ignored by the media because it doesn't chime with the cultural differences that they adore underlining - that Muslim women may choose through modesty to keep themselves unseen by any men but their husbands.
I suspect it is a mix of the two, rather than, as the media has it, a wholesale subjugation of Muslim women by Muslim men.
It still does not evade the irony that Western people appear to take issue with Muslim men dictating what Muslim women wear, when they obviously want to do exactly the same thing - hence the enforcement of laws like this.

Ah but one learns the norms of a society from what one is taught as a child, so how free is the feeling that one needs to wear such a garment ? Granted that problem cuts across all one's values; but this excess modesty one included.
Indeed there is an irony in all wanting to dictate what is worn. But at least one side can claim it is a temporary means to an end. Not that I think it is the right way to go about it. Should sort out burkas first for ID purposes, and allow the freedom from them to filter into genuine free choices for other garments.

Whenever I see Muslim women, most of them don't wear the full burka. Most of them seem to manage with a small shawl or scarf over their faces. I still can't see what is wrong with this.
What business is it of mine what women wear, on the beach or anywhere else ...personally I would rather see a Burkina than some woman who is wearing a bikini, but perhaps shouldn't !
