I answered this ages ago - but forgot to press 'submit' ( I quite often forget that bit). If I remember rightly , my answer was to the effect that the purges could, just possibly - by a huge stretch of the imagination - be linked with Erdogan's desire to create an Islamic despotism so that the country could lurch towards Russia and even Syria. I may be wrong, of course...

I think you are wrong. You don't shoot down a Russian military jet if you are trying to ally with that country. And Russia does not like Islam anymore than the west does, hence its battles in Afghanistan, Chechen and against Islamic State. Turkey has been at the forefront in the war against Syria.

This just highlights the flaws in western countries foreign policies. We are quite happy to over throw dictators like gaddafi, Assad & saddam and then sit back when there is an opportunity to get rid of probably the most dangerous of them all.
