jno....OK, that sounds a reasonable explanation, I just et rather fed up with the pontifications of people who feel that they are educated, just because they read "broadsheets."..
only two national broadsheets left during the week, the Telegraph and the FT. Plus the Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times at the weekend.
jno...I think the Guardian would be a tad upset to be called a tabloid !

Its a Berliner apparently, so sort-of halfway.....a midi if you like !
Yes I am sure they will apologise.
Higher standards are expected of certain papers.
You can't stop the truth being told can you
ichkeria is right here. If this headline had come from one of newspapers at the rabid end of the scale, it would have been entirely expected.

Having said that, I don't think that the Thunderer is anything like as great a newspaper since it moved to being a tabloid a few years ago.
I didn't call it a tabloid, mikey, just said it wasn't a broadsheet. It and the Observer (same owners) are a continental size, hence the name Berliner.
It may be an inappropriate headline, considering it is linked to this savage murder, but it does not say anything that is not true.

Whether or not it upsets the local 'community', Rochdale can be classed as a sex grooming town, and although some may say " where a sex grooming gang 'ONCE' operated", it was not just one gang there have been others and there is no reason to believe they are still not taking place, hence Operation Doublet.

If it cannot be directly linked with the Mail, then why not just invent a scenario.
I don't think anyone is arguing that the headline wasn't factually correct. The debate is whether it was a piece of journalism appropriate for a paper such as The Times.
Dear oh dear, just who do some of you people think you are?
Please believe me when I tell you, some of you aren't nearly as clever as you have convinced yourselves you are.
( I see my fishing excersize worked)
How,do,we,know you're clever enough to judge 'us' Svejk? Surely by coming out with such a statement you, in my opinion, put yourself in the same self appointed lofty position as those you accuse. No?

Coming from the person who generally cannot enter a post without the addition of a number of uneducated expletives.
Mikey using uneducated expletives......eh?
and Zaks -who can't spell exercise lol!
You never see the headline "Psychic wins the lottery"

Dave.
Nice one, retro. ;o)
oh dear.

My opinion is that the headline is clumsy and was always going to attract negative comment. I don't know how I would feel if I actually lived in Rochdale.

Regarding the necessity of issuing an apology, like many public apologies, they rarely have any point. I understand the sentiment behind the police comment regarding inflaming the situation and increasing tension but what is an apology going to achieve? The headline has been published and that cannot be undone and if the community are going to react then the horse will already have bolted.

To issue a correction is one thing, to apologise is another...
