Perhaps so. I haven't cast eyes on one for years and most shops will not accept them.
Your right, they are pretty useless as most shops will refuse them.

I've had them in the past when I was building. ( And yes I was paying tax!)
I would like to help stamp out crime so would be quite willing to take any amount of £50 notes into my on line bank account in order to help the banks in their hour of need.
I can't help wondering if the government wouldn't like to wean us off cash altogether. Much easier to tax money if people have got it all in online accounts rather than stuffed in their mattresses, and much easier to keep an eye on what you're up to.
In the days when I used to have a few kicking around they were not easy to get rid of in the shops! Too big a risk for them!
yeah but what would the Lords and ladies use to snort their cocaine ?

Can't see the reasoning behind this, money is money no matter what the denomination and would be acceptable to any dishonest person.
I can't remember the last time I saw one or used one. They are next to impossible to use in shops, especially small corner shops.

As more and more transactions are being done with cards, and now with contactless, I can't see the point of hanging on to anything that so few us use anymore !
With a lot of people now having their salaries/pensions paid directly into bank accounts & paying bills by direct debit & using debit cards I can see a time coming when cash will be superfluous.
Ron...for a lot of the younger generation, that time has already arrived, if my nieces are anything to judge by !
I work in the cash office of a large store. I see on average ten a day in the shop's takings.
DSJ...what kind of percentage of the total cash would that be ?

I am thinking very small.
Yes, a small proportion of the total takings.

I see loads on auction programmes!
Very useful when buying a car for cash though
There are still lots of outlets who only take cash.
True, Canary. My local Chinese does. Also taxi drivers.
I used them regularly. Never had even a query. Maybe till person seeking confirmation from other staff member, but no problems. They are nice and big and usually not all tatty and crumpled like the £20 pound notes, and as for the pathetic £5 tiny piece of rubbish.
Bring back white fivers eh David ;-)
