So as the terrorists need to reload then why do people run and hide so have the least loss of life? Surely if people were taught to attack as opposed to run they would be able to take out the gunmen first with out causing too much loss.

Lets say in the paris attack in the musica place. The terrorists had an AK47 with a standard 30 rounds with an average of 5 rounds per life taken you could escape with 6 deaths in there per person pending if they wore suicide vests or not.

Yes its easy to go hide and wait I mean its instinct but if we went against instinct we could reduce the deaths potentially.

What do you think on this advice given?

American advice ( no ref ) is attack or die ! You see usually when you are being mugged or robbed - you give up your wallet and co operated and the mugger co-operated by letting you go - This is a social interaction governed by rules everyone knows For a terrorist attack the idea is to kill [us] - cowering will not work - nor even shouning la adrabni, ana Brittanee (...

You can't advise people to attack in a situation like that. What with, exactly?
No two situations are the same, but the chances are it will be a scene of confusion and panic, with the assailant(s) having the benefit of surprise, as well as lethal weaponry. By the time you've recovered sufficiently to weigh up all the arguments for and against this and that you may well, and probably will,
be dead
The gunmen were on a balcony in Paris and just picked people off, so you have a basic misunderstanding of what happened there. As for attacking.....I've no comment as it's one of the most ridiculous suggestions I've ever heard.
Are you a member of the NRA?. That is the sort of lunatic statement they make.
... but who will bell the cat?
It seems pretty commonsense to run away. The shooters can't have infinite ammo a la Lara Croft, so eventually must stop shooting, and if as many as possible get away then they've nothing to shoot at.
It's heroic to think we ought to pile in and sometimes it does happen - remember Glasgow Airport?
I think most police and ambulance personnel would advise you to leg it though.
Did you see this?
This is what happens when you let a lot of idiots have guns!

I think the police assume too much here.
Do they really believe a surprised and shocked public would act with calm and think on their feet just like primed actors.
There were more than one Kalashnikov discharged in Paris. If one terrorist empties they yell it to their colleague "Empty" and reloads whilst the others continue sustained fire. That is tactical training and there have been reports that this is adopted by ISIS terrorists so their training and equipment is formidable.
I would suggest that to fight and die sounds good but you wouldneed a co-ordinated effort by all potential victims toact in a cohesive disciplined manner. It won't happen.
The advice given,I suppose ,is the best they can do.
I noticed that the safe room that the two escapees locked themselves in to hide was easily accessed by the Police Firearms unit without the aid of a portable door ram. It might have been a little more reassuring if more effort was shown to be needed to access the room.
a) Easier said than done;
b) Just offensive to the victims by implying in some sense that they could and should have done more. A guy is pointing a gun at you and shooting everyone dead around you. Good luck keeping a level head in that situation. I tend to flat-out panic when someone taller than me is standing next to me sometimes.
ukanonymous - can you identify yourself for us please?

I'd like us all to be standing behind you, when you go into the attack in the next terrorist shootout.
On a lighter note, I am sitting here drinking my morning cuppa from a mug emblazoned with the motto: "Drink Tea: Keep Calm.".
I'm afraid the only choice I'd have is to fall on the floor and play dead as l can't run either away or towards the attacker.
On a cheerful note. If it happens when out Christmas shopping in Harrods and you are wounded do not expect the Entry Team to stop and render first aid to you. That aid has been kicked into touch. Quite sensibly you will be ignored by the officers until the threats are neutralised and the area is safe. Then you get the ambulance sevice later. :-)
By the way, that motto, or slogan, that I referred to at 1350 is a variant of one issued by the British Ministry of Information in 1939 in anticipation of mass bombing and gas attacks by the Germans.
Stuey
Variants of that motto are all the rage here for the last several years. You find them on mugs, teashirts, baseball caps anything marketable in the IWM shops.
Surely it would depend on the situation for instance as pointed out about there is a world of difference between a lone gunman and a bunch of them.

I dont think any of us can comment on how we would react unless we have been in a similar situation. You have fractions of a second in some cases, just as those Policemen do when some scum points a gun that many on here like to see dragged through the courts. (Plod not the scum - they must be showered with compo)
Retro, my sister bought me some tea and mugs a couple of years ago with that on them. This is what I found when I looked it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Calm_and_Carry_On
Stuey
I see they do a wobblypop Keep Calm glass as well.

stuey, I thought the story was that the actual slogan was never used?
https://history.blog.gov.uk/2014/06/27/keep-calm-and-carry-on-the-compromise-behind-the-slogan/
Woogang, there is reference to its usage in the thread that I posted. Quite interesting I thought.
